Paul Pelosi, husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is facing possible misdemeanor charges after a hit-and-run crash in California’s wine country left another vehicle with significant damage. The 86-year-old was behind the wheel of his brown convertible on Friday when he struck a legally parked car in Yountville, a small Napa County town known for its vineyards. According to authorities, he briefly stopped after the collision, then drove away from the scene.

The Napa County Sheriff’s Office said a witness saw the crash unfold and immediately called 911 to report it. Deputies were given a description of the vehicle’s direction of travel and soon located a California Highway Patrol unit parked behind a brown convertible, partially blocking a nearby roadway. The car had significant damage to its front right side, consistent with the reported collision, and deputies identified the driver as Pelosi.

Pelosi reportedly told officers that he knew he had hit something but could not say exactly when or what caused the damage to his car. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident. Investigators said the crash did not appear to involve alcohol, and Pelosi was not arrested at the scene.

The vehicle he struck was legally parked along the roadside. Deputies noted that the damage to the parked car was serious enough to warrant a formal police response and referral for prosecution. The case has since been handed to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office for review.

Family Response and Apology

A spokesperson for the Pelosi family confirmed that Paul Pelosi personally reached out to the owner of the damaged vehicle to apologize. He reportedly assured the owner that he would take responsibility for the cost of the damage. The family spokesperson added that Nancy Pelosi would not be commenting further, describing the matter as private.

The sheriff’s office has recommended a misdemeanor charge for fleeing the scene of an accident, since no injuries occurred. Officials also noted that Pelosi’s case has been referred to the Department of Motor Vehicles as part of a standard process used to evaluate whether older drivers should continue operating a vehicle. Authorities described this step as routine rather than punitive.

A Prior Brush With the Law

This is not the first time Paul Pelosi has faced legal trouble tied to a vehicle incident in Napa County. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence following a separate crash in the same county. He was sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation as part of that case.

Pelosi ultimately served only two days behind bars after receiving credit for good conduct, with the remaining day to be completed through a work program at the local courthouse. His probation terms required him to complete a three-month drinking driver education class. He was also ordered to install an ignition interlock device, a system that requires a breath sample before the engine can start.

As part of the same sentencing, Pelosi was ordered to pay roughly $5,000 in restitution to cover medical bills and lost wages related to the 2022 crash. He also faced nearly $2,000 in additional fines. The earlier case drew significant media attention given his family’s prominent political profile.

Past Violence Adds to Public Scrutiny

Paul Pelosi has also been the subject of national attention for reasons unrelated to driving. In late 2022, he was violently attacked with a hammer inside the family’s San Francisco home. The assailant, identified as David DePape, broke into the residence and assaulted him in an incident that drew widespread condemnation.

DePape was later convicted and sentenced to thirty years in prison for the attack. The assault left Pelosi with serious injuries and required a lengthy recovery process. That case remains one of the most high-profile incidents involving the family in recent years.

Taken together, Friday’s crash marks the latest in a string of incidents that have kept Paul Pelosi in the headlines despite holding no public office himself. As the husband of one of the most recognizable political figures in the country, his personal legal matters continue to draw scrutiny well beyond Napa County. The outcome of the current investigation will now rest with local prosecutors as they determine how to proceed with potential charges.

For now, authorities say the case remains under review, and no court date has been announced. Pelosi has not issued a public statement beyond the private apology relayed through a family spokesperson. Local officials have not indicated any additional legal exposure connected to Friday’s crash.
