“Michelle Obama Is a Man”: UFC’s Josh Hokit Said on Live TV at the White House

Josh Hokit made sure nobody was talking about his knockout. The 28-year-old undefeated UFC heavyweight won his fight at the UFC Freedom 250 event on June 14, held on the South Lawn of the White House, and then used his post-fight interview to yell a baseless and widely condemned claim about former First Lady Michelle Obama on live television in front of 4,000 people.

Let’s just say the crowd’s reaction was audible, and the internet’s reaction was swift.

The night was already surreal before a single punch landed. President Trump sat in the front row of the event, in between his wife, Melania, and UFC CEO Dana White, watching fights unfold on the White House lawn.

As The Hollywood Reporter noted, the event was streamed on Paramount+, whose parent company has been under scrutiny following its settlement of a lawsuit with President Donald Trump over a “60 Minutes” interview and recent firings at the CBS newsmagazine. So yes, the stage was already politically charged before Hokit ever stepped in front of a microphone.

What Actually Happened Inside That Octagon After the Bell

Hokit’s fight came first. He completely dominated Derrick Lewis, who had been described by TMZ as Trump’s favorite fighter, knocking him out in the second round, and extending the night’s knockout streak to all four fights on the card. That should have been the headline. Instead, what followed became the story.

In his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan, Hokit opened with a shoutout to Trump directly: “Shoutout to Trump for having the balls to put some s*** like this on,” he said. He then called out Alex Pereira, before adding: “Michelle Obama is a man, am I right, America?”

The crowd of 4,000 groaned. Some laughed. Most seemed caught off guard. According to Variety, Rogan looked flustered but ultimately said nothing beyond, “Ladies and gentlemen, Josh Hokit.” The comment was not mentioned again on the broadcast. In short, there was no pushback, no pivot, and no acknowledgment from the production crew. The moment just hung in the air and moved on, which is somehow worse.

What made it stranger was what happened right before the comment.

Moments before he made the remark, Hokit placed a chain and pendant around President Trump’s neck. According to a White House pool reporter who witnessed it, Trump, who was seen smiling lightly at the controversial comment, removed the jewelry shortly afterward.

It remains unclear whether that was a reaction to Hokit’s comment. However, that detail is doing a lot of quiet work in this story.

This Was Not the First Time Hokit Made the Room Uncomfortable

If this is your first time hearing about Josh Hokit, just know that the Michelle Obama comment was not a one-off. The man spent the entire week leading up to UFC Freedom 250 making sure nobody could ignore him, and it worked every single time.

His alter ego, “The Incredible Hok,” was front and center at Friday’s press conference, where he leaned into a nervous, awkward energy while talking about his fellow fighters on the card. It was strange enough to get people talking. Then he went further.

Before the press conference even wrapped, Hokit brought up the recent divorce of main-event fighter Ilia Topuria, which was enough to make Dana White pull the plug on the whole thing mid-session. Yes, you read that right, the UFC president shut it down on the spot. Not a great look, but definitely a memorable one.

The weigh-ins the next day brought a different kind of spectacle. Hokit appeared to fake a vomiting episode, letting a discolored liquid drip from his mouth while telling people he had been drinking the night before. Whether it was performance art or just poor judgment, it kept his name in everyone’s mouth.

And if you go back even further, he was physically escorted off the stage by security at the very first press conference held to announce UFC Freedom 250 after allegedly insulting Topuria, as well as fellow headliner Pereira. So no, Sunday night was not an accident. This is just who Josh Hokit has decided to be.

He is also genuinely very good at fighting. He is undefeated; he just knocked out one of the most recognizable heavyweights in the sport, and, according to reports, a title fight may be in his near future, which, if you ask me, makes this all the more maddening. The talent is real, but his antics keep overshadowing it.

The Reaction Online Was Exactly What You Would Expect

Many on the left reacted to the comment with anger. On social media, the clip circulated fast, and the backlash was immediate and sharp. The comments landed differently given the location, because ultimately, this was not a press conference, a podcast, or a random media appearance.

It was a nationally broadcast event on the South Lawn of the White House, on Paramount+, in front of the sitting president of the United States. That setting gives the moment a weight that an ordinary post-fight rant would not carry.

Political chatter was less direct for most of the evening, with discussion largely focused on how surreal the event felt and how honored the fighters were to be competing at the White House, with an emphasis on celebrating veterans and first responders. Hokit’s comment punctured all of that instantly.

What Comes Next for a Fighter Who Lives for the Chaos

Hokit has figured out something that many athletes have not: chaos gets you attention. Whether that attention translates into a legacy, or just a collection of embarrassing clips, is a different question.

He is undefeated, he fights with real skill, and he is clearly positioning himself for a title shot. But every time he opens his mouth outside the octagon, he gives the sports world a reason to debate whether they want to see him win one.

That tension is going to follow him all the way to the top, assuming he keeps going, and right now nothing suggests he plans to dial it back.
