Far from an insult, the symbolic figure was actually the exact amount Kardashian herself requested, closing out a legal saga that has stretched on for nearly a decade since masked men held her at gunpoint and made off with millions of dollars in jewelry.
The ruling, handed down on Tuesday, September 15, comes more than a year after a French court convicted eight people for their roles in the infamous 2016 heist, an ordeal Kardashian has previously described as the most terrifying experience of her life.
While the criminal case determined guilt and sentencing back in 2025, this week’s civil ruling specifically addressed compensation for Kardashian and several others connected to the crime, closing out what has been an unusually long road to a final resolution for everyone involved.
The Symbolic One-Euro Verdict, Explained
According to a lawyer involved in the case, Kardashian specifically requested the token one-euro sum rather than seeking financial damages for what was, by any measure, an enormously costly crime.
That same nominal amount was also awarded to Kardashian’s longtime friend and stylist, Simone Harouche, who was staying downstairs in the Paris hotel at the time of the attack and had requested the identical figure.
Asking for such a minimal amount is not unusual in French civil proceedings tied to criminal cases, where symbolic damages are sometimes sought to establish legal acknowledgment of harm rather than to pursue a payout.
Not everyone connected to the case walked away with such a small figure. A former receptionist at the Hôtel de Pourtalès, the property where the robbery took place, was awarded 109,516 euros, or roughly $126,472, after testifying that he suffered lasting trauma from being confronted during the heist.
The hotel itself was separately awarded 50,000 euros, or about $57,741, in damages tied to the incident. Kardashian and Harouche addressed the ruling in a joint statement shortly after it was handed down, reflecting on the toll the experience has taken even years later.
“The experience was deeply traumatic, and its impact has stayed with us,” the two said, before adding a note of gratitude for how the process ultimately concluded. “We are thankful to the Court and everyone who supported us throughout this process,” they continued, hoping the ruling would finally let them move forward.
Revisiting the Robbery That Changed Everything
The case began in October 2016, when Kardashian was in Paris for Fashion Week and staying at the Hôtel de Pourtalès.
According to testimony from the criminal trial, two men disguised as police officers forced their way into her hotel suite in the middle of the night, restraining her with zip ties and tape before making off with more than $6 million worth of jewelry, including a diamond ring she had worn to a Givenchy show earlier that evening.
The scale and brazenness of the crime made international headlines at the time, and Kardashian has spoken candidly in the years since about believing she might not survive the encounter.
The case eventually led investigators to a group of suspects who became known across France as “les papys braqueurs,” or “the grandpa robbers,” a nickname tied to the surprising age of several of those involved.
Six of the eight people ultimately convicted were in their 60s and 70s at trial, an unusual profile for a heist of that magnitude.
When Kardashian returned to Paris in May 2025 to testify in person, she once again described the robbery as the most terrifying experience of her life, a phrase she has repeated consistently in the years since the attack occurred.
None of the eight convicted defendants returned to prison after sentencing, since their time already served in pretrial detention counted toward their punishment, and none appealed the verdicts.
Kardashian’s reflections on the robbery have evolved considerably over the years. In a resurfaced 2017 interview on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” Kardashian discussed how the experience reshaped her outlook on material possessions, telling Ellen at the time, “I was definitely materialistic before.”
She went on to describe feeling like the ordeal had ultimately taught her something valuable about her priorities, a sentiment she has continued to echo in interviews since.
Following last year’s convictions, Kardashian issued a statement describing the lingering effects of the crime, saying it left “a lasting impact on me and my family,” a comment that speaks to just how long the shadow of that night has followed her.
A Rough Stretch for Kardashian’s Sense of Security
This week’s ruling arrives at a notably inconvenient moment for Kardashian, coming only weeks after she faced an entirely separate security scare much closer to home.
In early August, a 27-year-old man was arrested after allegedly breaking into her Hidden Hills, California, mansion, which was undergoing renovations at the time and unoccupied while Kardashian and her children stayed elsewhere.
According to reports at the time, security personnel spotted the suspect loading items into a vehicle before deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrived and took him into custody.
He was accused of stealing valuables from the property and briefly driving off in one of Kardashian’s own vehicles before being apprehended.
While authorities have stressed that the Hidden Hills incident was far less dangerous than the 2016 Paris robbery, given that no one was home and no violence was involved, the timing has nonetheless underscored just how frequently Kardashian’s properties and personal safety have come under threat over the years.
Beyond the two most recent incidents, Kardashian has also dealt with past security breaches, including an episode in 2017 in which a man entered the driveway of her and Kanye West’s former Bel Air residence and vandalized several vehicles.
Taken together, the pattern has fueled ongoing conversations among fans and security experts alike about the unique challenges of protecting high-profile figures, even within gated, closely monitored communities.
For now, though, the closure of the Paris case marks a genuine milestone for Kardashian, even if the financial outcome amounts to little more than pocket change.
Nearly ten years after that night at the Hôtel de Pourtalès, the reality star and businesswoman finally has a legal chapter she can consider fully closed, even as the emotional weight of the experience clearly remains.
Whether the symbolic one-euro award brings any real sense of resolution is something only Kardashian herself can say, but her own words suggest that, after almost a decade, she is more than ready to leave this particular ordeal in the past.
