A routine trip to Walmart turned into a deadly confrontation in North Lauderdale, Florida, after a dispute over a parking space ended with a 62-year-old man shot in the store’s parking lot, according to authorities.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened around midday Tuesday outside a Walmart in North Lauderdale. Investigators identified the man who died as Bart Diguglielmo, 62. He was taken to a nearby hospital after the shooting, but doctors later pronounced him dead.
The woman who fired the gun has not been publicly identified. Authorities said she stayed at the scene, cooperated with detectives, and told investigators she acted in self-defense.
According to the sheriff’s office, the confrontation began as a verbal argument over a parking space. What started as a common parking lot disagreement quickly escalated into violence, leaving shoppers, drivers, and bystanders watching a frightening scene unfold in broad daylight.
Video obtained by ABC News appears to show part of the encounter. In dashcam footage, the woman is seen getting out of a vehicle near a parking space. Diguglielmo then approaches her. The woman appears to be holding a handgun in one hand and a cellphone in the other as the two move around the parking lot.
The footage shows Diguglielmo initially walking away before turning back toward the woman. In a cellphone video, the woman can be heard telling him to “walk away” before gunfire is heard.
After the shot, Diguglielmo is seen on the ground, at times sitting and lying down, as minutes pass before law enforcement arrives. A responding officer later appears to detain or secure the woman at the scene.
The sheriff’s office has not said whether the woman was arrested or formally taken into custody after the shooting. No charges have been announced.
The case is expected to be sent to the 17th Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office in Broward County, where prosecutors will decide whether to file criminal charges. A spokesperson for that office told ABC News on Thursday that prosecutors had not yet received the case from law enforcement.
That decision could become the central question in the investigation: whether the shooting legally qualifies as self-defense or whether prosecutors believe the woman’s use of deadly force crossed a criminal line.
For now, investigators are still reviewing evidence, including video from the scene. The footage may become especially important because it captures parts of the argument, the movement of both people, and the final moments before the shooting.
The incident also raises familiar concerns about how quickly minor public disputes can turn dangerous when a weapon is involved. Parking lots are ordinary places where tempers often flare over space, traffic, and frustration. But in this case, a brief confrontation outside a busy retail store ended with a man dead and a woman facing possible legal consequences.
Walmart has not offered a detailed public comment on the shooting. A company spokesperson referred questions about the case to local law enforcement.
Authorities have not released additional details about what was said during the argument, what happened before the video began, or whether either person had previous contact with the other. It remains unclear if investigators believe there were additional witnesses beyond those captured on video.
As of now, the woman’s self-defense claim remains just that: a claim under investigation. Prosecutors will have to weigh the evidence, the video, witness accounts, and Florida law before deciding whether the shooting was justified or whether charges are warranted.
For Diguglielmo’s family, the legal process will not change the central fact of the case: a 62-year-old man went to a Walmart parking lot and never came home.
