Love at first sight has long been one of romance’s most familiar ideas. Movies, books, and personal stories often describe a moment when two people meet and immediately feel a powerful connection.

But in an era of dating apps, changing relationship expectations, and more cautious approaches to romance, do people still believe in that instant spark?

A recent dating study suggests many singles do. Match’s 2026 Singles in America study found that 62% of surveyed U.S. singles said they believe in love at first sight.

Match Group conducted the study with researchers from Indiana University’s Kinsey Institute and surveyed about 5,000 unmarried U.S. adults who were not living with a partner, in a domestic partnership, or in a committed relationship. Pasted text

The finding means “most” applies to this particular survey group, but it does not prove that a majority of all U.S. single adults share the same belief.

Match funded the study and reported it through the company’s release, though it described the sample as demographically representative and involved academic researchers from the Kinsey Institute. Pasted text

The results also reveal something more complicated than a simple return to fairy-tale romance. While many singles believe in an immediate connection, many also recognize that attraction can develop slowly through conversation, shared experiences, and common values.

One of the most interesting findings from the survey is the difference between belief and personal experience. While 62% of respondents said they believe in love at first sight, 47% said they had experienced it themselves. Pasted text

That gap suggests many people may view love at first sight as a possibility or romantic ideal, even if they haven’t experienced it personally.

The phrase itself can also mean different things to different people. For one person, it may describe an immediate physical attraction. For another, it may mean feeling unusually comfortable during a first conversation or sensing a strong emotional connection very quickly.

Researchers who study attraction often distinguish between an early spark and the development of a lasting relationship. Feeling an instant connection does not automatically predict whether a relationship will become committed, satisfying, or long-lasting.

The “spark” may not always happen in the first moment

Although many singles believe in love at first sight, the same research suggests people are not necessarily waiting for an instant magical moment before giving someone a chance.

The 2026 survey found that many respondents reported attraction developing after getting to know someone better. Nearly half said they had fallen for someone they were not initially attracted to. Others said conversation, shared interests, and shared values could change how they felt about someone. Pasted text

This creates a more balanced picture of modern dating. Some people still believe in an immediate spark, but many also understand that attraction can grow. A first impression may open the door, but deeper connection often develops through experiences that happen afterward.

Dating fatigue has not erased romantic hope

Modern dating is not always easy. Many singles describe frustration, uncertainty, and exhaustion when searching for relationships.

However, romantic optimism remains strong. Match’s previous Singles in America research found that many surveyed singles still believed in lasting romantic love, even as they described challenges with modern dating. Pasted text

This combination of optimism and frustration reflects a common tension in dating today. People may feel tired by the process while still hoping to find a meaningful connection.

Believing in love at first sight does not necessarily mean someone has unrealistic expectations. It may simply reflect a desire for emotional connection and the hope that meeting the right person can feel different from ordinary encounters.

Why first impressions matter in relationships

Psychologists have long studied how attraction begins. Initial impressions can influence whether two people want to continue interacting, but researchers generally separate early attraction from long-term relationship success.

Relationship psychologist Paul Eastwick discusses research suggesting that people can feel strong immediate attraction or connection when meeting someone. However, that feeling can mean different things.

A person may describe a powerful first conversation or early emotional connection as  “love at first sight” even when the experience involves more than simply seeing someone for the first time. Pasted text

This distinction matters because romantic feelings can change over time. Some relationships begin with an instant spark, while others develop gradually. Neither path automatically guarantees a stronger relationship.

Singles may want both romance and compatibility

The idea of love at first sight often focuses on emotion, but modern relationships also involve practical compatibility.

The same 2026 survey found that many respondents valued factors that develop beyond an initial meeting, including conversation, shared interests, and shared values. Pasted text

This suggests that many singles are not simply searching for a dramatic first moment. They may want the excitement of attraction along with the qualities that help relationships grow.

A strong connection may begin quickly, but maintaining a relationship usually involves communication, trust, respect, and understanding.

Love at first sight remains a belief, not a scientific guarantee

The survey shows that many singles believe in love at first sight, but it does not prove that love at first sight is universal or that relationships that begin with instant attraction are more successful.

The study measured  what people believe and what they reported experiencing. It did not measure whether those relationships lasted longer, were happier, or were more successful than relationships that developed gradually. Pasted text

That distinction is important. A belief in romance is different from evidence about relationship outcomes.

For many people, love may begin with an unforgettable first meeting. For others, it may emerge through friendship, shared experiences, and gradually building trust.

The modern dating landscape still leaves room for romance

The idea of love at first sight continues to capture people’s imagination because it represents something many people value: the possibility of an unexpected connection.

The latest Singles in America findings suggest that even as dating becomes more complicated, many singles still believe that meaningful relationships can begin in surprising ways.

At the same time, the research shows that romance is not limited to one formula. Some connections begin with an immediate spark, while others grow over time through conversation and shared experiences.

Perhaps the lasting appeal of love at first sight is not that everyone experiences it, but that many people remain open to the possibility that one meeting could change everything.
