A 40-year-old Washington, D.C., man has been arrested and charged in connection with the death of a 2-month-old girl whose death was ruled a homicide after she suffered blunt-force injuries. Prosecutors allege that Demetrius Beatty fatally assaulted the infant while she and her twin sister were in his care and later attempted to attribute the injuries to his 6-year-old son.

Beatty faces charges of first-degree felony murder and first-degree cruelty to children. He was arrested on September 16, 2026, about a month after the infant’s death. At his initial court appearance the following day, a judge found probable cause and ordered him held without bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for September 28.

The victim was identified by the Metropolitan Police Department as Khamyah Honesty, a 2-month-old girl from Southeast Washington. Police said they were called to an apartment in the 800 block of New Jersey Avenue Southeast at about 9:47 p.m. on August 16 after receiving a report of an unconscious infant. Officers found Khamyah unresponsive and suffering from blunt-force injuries. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died.

The D.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled on August 18 that Khamyah’s cause of death was blunt-force trauma and classified the manner of death as homicide. The Metropolitan Police Department’s Special Victims Unit is investigating the case in coordination with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.

What Prosecutors Allege Happened

According to court documents described by prosecutors and news organizations, Beatty was responsible for the care of Khamyah, her twin sister, and three other children on the night of August 16.

The prosecution’s case centers on the allegation that Beatty himself caused Khamyah’s fatal injuries. Investigators say the explanation he initially gave emergency responders and later provided to police did not match the medical evidence gathered during the investigation.

Authorities have also alleged that Beatty was upset after learning that Khamyah and her twin had been fathered by another man. The twins’ biological father was reportedly incarcerated at the time. Prosecutors have presented that alleged resentment as part of the circumstances surrounding the killing.

The 911 Call and Initial Explanation

The events described in the arrest documents began with a 911 call. According to reporting based on court records, Beatty contacted emergency services and told the dispatcher that his 6-year-old autistic and nonverbal son had attacked the infant.

Beatty reportedly said that the baby’s face was swollen and that her nose was bleeding and asked for emergency assistance. Police later found him with the injured infant.

Investigators subsequently questioned the explanation that the 6-year-old had inflicted the injuries. A forensic pathologist determined that Khamyah had suffered multiple serious injuries, including trauma to her head and fractures described in court documents. Prosecutors say the medical evidence was inconsistent with the idea that a young child had caused the injuries.

Investigators also reported that Beatty gave different accounts about what had happened. According to court documents cited by news outlets, he variously described being in the hallway, hearing a noise and finding the baby injured, or being involved in other activities involving the children.

The Children’s Earlier Circumstances

The investigation has also brought attention to events involving the children before Khamyah’s death.

Court documents cited in recent reports describe an earlier incident in which Khamyah was seriously injured after reportedly falling down an escalator at a D.C. Metro station. The incident occurred about 16 days before her death. Investigators later questioned aspects of the account surrounding that injury.

Reports based on the court documents also allege that the twins were previously confined inside a closet while Beatty was caring for them. Prosecutors say Beatty gave an explanation involving the babies crying and smelling bad. Because this information comes from allegations in the criminal investigation, it should not be presented as an adjudicated finding.

The investigation has also raised broader concerns about home conditions. Reports citing court documents say investigators observed a cluttered and unsanitary residence and found other children with signs that prompted concern from authorities. The surviving children were subsequently taken into the care of child-welfare authorities.

A relative of the twins’ biological father had also reportedly contacted the D.C. Child and Family Services Agency about concerns involving the children before Khamyah’s death, according to court documents described in news reports.

Charges Against Demetrius Beatty

Beatty has been charged with two offenses:

First-degree felony murder: This is the murder charge filed in connection with Khamyah’s death. Prosecutors allege that Beatty’s conduct resulted in the infant’s death.

First-degree cruelty to children: This charge concerns alleged conduct toward a child and is separate from the felony-murder count.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office has emphasized that the allegations contained in the criminal complaint are not proof of guilt. Under the U.S. justice system, Beatty remains presumed innocent unless and until prosecutors establish his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in court.

What Happens Next?

The next significant step is the September 28 preliminary hearing. The hearing will take place as the criminal case proceeds through D.C. Superior Court. Beatty remains in custody without bond based on the order entered after his September 17 appearance.

The prosecution will continue building its case around the medical evidence, witness accounts, and other evidence investigators say connects Beatty to the infant’s death. The defense will have an opportunity to challenge the government’s evidence and present its own arguments as the case moves forward.

At this stage, the central facts established by authorities are that Khamyah Honesty died at 2 months old after suffering blunt-force trauma, that the medical examiner classified the death as a homicide, and that Demetrius Beatty has been charged in connection with that death.
