Jennifer Garner did not need weeks of rehearsals to build believable romantic chemistry with Timothy Olyphant for The Five Star Weekend. Their friendship stretches back nearly three decades, giving the actors a level of familiarity that made their latest screen relationship feel comfortable from the beginning.
Jennifer Garner explained that their shared history allowed them to approach the material with trust already firmly established.
The Peacock drama stars Jennifer Garner as Hollis Shaw, a successful cook and public figure struggling to rebuild her life after the sudden death of her husband, Matthew. Hoping to find comfort and clarity, Hollis invites four women connected to different chapters of her life to spend an elaborate weekend at her family home on Nantucket.
The gathering is meant to encourage healing, but emotional conflicts, old wounds, and unexpected discoveries quickly complicate the retreat.
Olyphant plays Jack Finnigan, Hollis’ high school sweetheart and a familiar face from the life she knew before marriage, motherhood and fame. His return forces Hollis to confront feelings she may not be ready to acknowledge while she continues mourning her husband. All eight episodes of the series became available on Peacock following its July 9 premiere.
A Working Relationship That Began in the 1990s

Jennifer and Olyphant first worked together in the early stages of their careers on the independent film 1999, released in 1997. The New York production began a professional connection that continued as both actors moved into increasingly prominent film and television roles.
Their earliest collaboration came long before Jennifer became widely associated with Alias and Olyphant built his reputation through projects including Deadwood and Justified.
Their most recognizable pairing came in the 2007 romantic comedy Catch and Release. Jennifer portrayed a woman coping with the death of her fiancé, while Olyphant played one of the people who helped her uncover difficult truths about the man she planned to marry.
Jennifer has since learned that the film continued attracting audiences long after its theatrical run, giving the project an unexpected second life among viewers.
The actors later appeared in the 2016 ensemble comedy Mother’s Day, although their latest collaboration gives them a more emotionally connected storyline. Years of friendship have also linked Jennifer to Olyphant’s family, including his wife, whom Jennifer has known for a long time. That personal familiarity created a foundation extending far beyond the experience of simply meeting again on another set.
Real Trust Helped Ground an Emotional Romance
Hollis and Jack’s relationship develops during one of the most vulnerable periods of Hollis’ life. Only six months have passed since Matthew died in a car accident, leaving her caught between grief, responsibility, and the possibility of moving forward. Jack’s presence introduces romance into the story without removing the emotional weight surrounding her loss.
Jennifer said the history she shares with Olyphant allowed them to begin filming without the usual process of slowly establishing comfort. They already understood one another’s rhythms, personalities and approaches to performing, which helped them enter emotionally intimate scenes with confidence. Their familiarity also allowed the relationship between Hollis and Jack to feel lived-in rather than newly constructed for the cameras.
That connection fits naturally with the larger story, which repeatedly examines how people from the past can return during moments of profound change. Hollis spends the weekend looking backward at friendships, choices, and relationships while also considering what kind of future remains possible.
Jack therefore represents more than a romantic opportunity because he is connected to an earlier version of Hollis that existed before her carefully managed public life.
Jennifer Garner Helped Bring Familiar Collaborators Into the Cast
Jennifer served as an executive producer in addition to playing the leading role, giving her influence over the adaptation’s creative development. She played a significant part in bringing both Olyphant and Josh Hamilton into the project because she had previously established working relationships with them. Hamilton portrays Matthew, whose death shapes Hollis’ decisions and remains central to the series’ emotional arc.
Showrunner Bekah Brunstetter explained that Jennifer wanted dependable actors with whom she already shared meaningful professional connections to portray the two central men in Hollis’ life.
Olyphant became the natural choice for Jack, while Hamilton provided the emotional presence Matthew needed. Their casting gave Jennifer trusted scene partners for two relationships that carry very different forms of love, memory, and loss.
Brunstetter also described Jennifer as approachable and deeply involved in the producing process. The collaboration helped translate Elin Hilderbrand’s 2023 novel into an eight-episode television series centered on friendship, grief, identity, and personal transformation.
The production retained the book’s Nantucket setting while expanding its characters through an ensemble of established performers.
Female Friendships Remain at the Heart of the Story

Although Jack’s return provides romantic tension, the primary structure of The Five Star Weekend centers on Hollis and the women she gathers around her. Chloë Sevigny plays childhood friend Tatum, Regina Hall portrays college friend Dru-Ann, D’Arcy Carden appears as fellow mother Brooke, and Gemma Chan plays Gigi, a woman Hollis knows through social media.
Each guest represents a different period in Hollis’ life and arrives with personal complications of her own.
Jennifer was attracted to the project because the women were given complete storylines rather than being reduced to supporting roles around a single central character. Their histories contain misunderstandings, resentments, private struggles, and loyalties that become increasingly visible during the weekend.
The series uses those relationships to explore motherhood, ambition, fame, aging, and the difficulty of maintaining friendships across changing circumstances.
The actresses also formed a strong connection while working together, an experience Jennifer hopes could continue beyond the first group of episodes. She has expressed interest in returning for another season, although no second-season renewal was confirmed in the initial reports surrounding the premiere.
For now, the complete first season of The Five Star Weekend is available to stream on Peacock.
