The post Why Your Dog Stares at You While It Poops — and What It’s Really Trying to Tell You first appeared on Crafting Your Home.
You’re standing outside, patiently waiting for your dog to finish its business, when something strange happens. Your furry friend squats, looks you straight in the eye, and refuses to break eye contact. Suddenly, what should be an ordinary bathroom break feels like an awkward staring contest.
Sound familiar? You’re definitely not the only dog owner who’s wondered what’s going on.
According to PetMD, veterinarians aren’t entirely sure why some dogs stare at their owners while pooping. However, animal behavior experts have suggested several possible explanations, ranging from seeking reassurance to expecting a familiar reward.
Here’s what that mysterious look might mean.
Your Dog Might Be Looking for Reassurance
One possible explanation is surprisingly sweet. Your dog may be checking whether you’re nearby while it’s doing its business.
Veterinarian Dr. Rochelle Hartson explains that dogs might look toward their owners for reassurance during bathroom breaks. The idea is that squatting can leave a dog feeling somewhat vulnerable, so a familiar person’s presence can be comforting.
Think about it from your dog’s perspective. You’re standing nearby, and your presence might offer a little reassurance during an otherwise ordinary moment.
However, this remains a theory, not a scientifically confirmed explanation.
That intense stare doesn’t necessarily mean your dog has appointed you its personal bodyguard. It might simply be checking in with someone familiar.

Your Dog Could Be Expecting a Reward

Remember those early house-training days when every successful bathroom trip earned an enthusiastic “Good dog!” or perhaps a treat?
Your dog might remember them, too.
Dr. Hartson suggests some dogs look to their owners because they’ve learned to associate bathroom breaks with praise and rewards. According to VCA Animal Hospitals, positive reinforcement is an important part of house-training. Owners are encouraged to praise dogs and offer rewards after they eliminate in the right place.
Over time, a dog might associate completing its business with receiving attention. So, that serious expression could mean your dog is anticipating a familiar response.
Of course, not every dog that makes eye contact is secretly negotiating for treats. It’s simply one possible explanation.
You Might Just Be Standing in the Wrong Place
Here’s a possibility that makes the entire situation considerably less mysterious. Your dog might not be staring at you intentionally at all.
Certified dog behaviorist Dana Fedman, quoted by PetMD, points out that dogs sometimes look around while doing their business. If you happen to be standing directly in their line of sight, what looks like meaningful eye contact could be nothing more than an ordinary glance.
Imagine you’re watching your dog and waiting patiently. Your dog looks up, happens to meet your eyes, and suddenly you’re convinced there’s a secret message being exchanged.
Sometimes, there isn’t.
It’s a useful reminder that not every little thing our pets do carries a deeper meaning.
Your Dog May Be Checking Your Reaction
Dogs can be surprisingly attentive to the people around them, particularly when something unfamiliar happens. A 2012 study published in PLOS ONE examined how dogs responded to a potentially frightening object while receiving emotional signals from humans.
Researchers found that most dogs looked toward a person for information. When owners responded positively, dogs were more willing to approach the unfamiliar object. Negative reactions tended to delay their approach.
This behavior is known as social referencing.
