Dogs cannot tell us in words that they feel safe, comfortable, and connected to us. Instead, they communicate through body language, daily habits and the choices they make around people.
A dog that trusts you may relax in your presence, seek you out for reassurance, and feel comfortable showing vulnerable behavior. However, no single action proves trust on its own. Animal behavior experts recommend looking at the dog’s whole body, surroundings, and usual personality.

They Relax Near You

A trusting dog may settle beside you with a loose body, relaxed face and naturally positioned ears. Its eyes may look soft, and its tail may rest in a neutral position or wag gently.
The RSPCA describes a relaxed dog as having a loose body, smooth hair, a relaxed mouth, and ears in a natural position.
A dog that can rest while you move around the room often shows it doesn’t see you as a threat.

They Choose to Stay Close

Some dogs follow their owners from room to room, lie near their feet, or choose a sleeping place close to the family. This can indicate that the dog enjoys your company and feels secure around you.
However, constant following is not always a sign of trust. It may also reflect separation anxiety, fear, or a need for reassurance. Look for relaxed body language rather than focusing only on physical closeness.
A comfortable dog may choose to be near you but still move away when it wants to rest.

They Sleep Deeply Around You

Sleep leaves animals vulnerable. A dog that regularly sleeps deeply in your presence may feel safe enough to relax.
Some dogs sleep on their side, stretch out, or lie with their head resting between their paws. Dogs Trust identifies relaxed, loose bodies and closed eyes as signs that a dog feels comfortable.
Sleeping on the back can also indicate comfort, but it is not always an invitation for a belly rub. Some dogs expose their stomach because they feel relaxed, while others do it as a submissive or anxious gesture. Look at the rest of the body before touching the dog.

They Lean Against You

A gentle lean can be a dog’s way of seeking contact and reassurance. Some dogs rest their body against a person’s leg, sit close, or place their head on a lap.
This behavior may show affection and confidence, particularly when the dog approaches voluntarily and remains relaxed. If the dog becomes stiff, turns its head away, or tries to escape, give it space.
Trust includes the ability to move away safely. Never force a dog to remain in physical contact.

They Make Calm Eye Contact

Soft, relaxed eye contact can signal that a dog is comfortable with you. A dog may look at you while waiting for food, preparing for a walk, or simply resting nearby.
This is different from a hard stare. A tense body, fixed eyes, raised hair, bared teeth, or a stiff tail can signal discomfort or a warning.
Avoid staring directly into an unfamiliar dog’s eyes. With your own dog, watch the expression and body posture that accompany eye contact.

They Bring You Toys

A dog that brings you a toy may be inviting play, asking for attention, or sharing something it considers valuable. It may also show that the dog associates you with enjoyable experiences.
Not every dog enjoys retrieving toys, and some prefer food puzzles, sniffing games, or quiet companionship. The important detail is that the dog approaches voluntarily and appears relaxed.
If a dog stiffens, guards the toy, or growls, do not try to take it away by force. Resource guarding requires careful management and, in some cases, help from a qualified behavior professional.
