A Florida woman, Malia Elizabeth Nummerdor, was arrested on September 15 after investigators with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office reviewed surveillance material that they said showed alleged sexual contact involving the family dog. Nummerdor, 38, was charged with sexual activity involving animals, a second-degree felony under Florida law. The arrest followed an investigation that began after authorities became aware of allegations shared on social media by her estranged husband. Investigators later received a sworn statement and digital files connected to the allegations.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, detectives began examining the allegations after learning about social media posts claiming that a woman had engaged in sexual activity with a pet dog. The person who made the allegations later provided investigators with a sworn statement and digital evidence from a home surveillance system. The investigation reportedly involved evidence collected from the residence, including screenshots and access to a laptop containing surveillance files. Authorities said they reviewed these materials as part of the investigation.
Reports based on the arrest affidavit identified the complainant as Erik Nummerdor, described as Malia Nummerdor’s estranged husband. According to those reports, detectives began looking into the matter after seeing public Facebook posts in which he claimed to have video and photographic evidence.
The affidavit-based reporting also stated that Erik Nummerdor had installed two security cameras inside the residence while investigating concerns about missing money from a coin container. One camera was reportedly placed in a bedroom, and he told authorities the camera was visible and known to people living in the home.
The investigation relied heavily on digital evidence. Authorities said investigators were given access to surveillance files and that the sheriff’s office obtained sworn statements and electronic material. The affidavit further indicated that detectives were allowed to take the computer containing the files for forensic examination. These materials formed part of the evidence considered before the arrest.
The case involves allegations concerning the family’s pet dog, identified in reporting based on the affidavit as Ranger. However, public reports at this stage describe allegations and evidence presented by investigators, not a final court determination. The criminal justice process requires legal proceedings to examine accusations before guilt can be established.
Police Findings, Arrest, and the Criminal Charge
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office said investigators interviewed Nummerdor on September 15. According to the agency, she confirmed that she was the person shown in the images and that the animal shown was the family dog. Investigators alleged that the video showed her partially nude and that the dog was positioned in a way they believed was consistent with sexual activity.
Nummerdor denied that sexual conduct had occurred, according to statements from law enforcement and reporting based on the arrest affidavit. The sheriff’s office stated that she could not provide a consistent explanation for what investigators said they observed. However, reports also noted her account that the recordings were from 2024, that she had not known about the cameras, and that she had been near the dog’s bed while petting the elderly animal.
During questioning, the affidavit-based report stated that Nummerdor requested an attorney. Detectives then ended the interview and told her she would be taken into custody. Requesting legal counsel is a constitutional right and does not by itself indicate guilt or wrongdoing.
Nummerdor was arrested in Port Charlotte on one count of sexual activity involving animals, also described in reports as sexual contact with an animal. The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office stated that the offense is classified as a second-degree felony under Florida law. At the time of the sheriff’s office announcement on September 16, she was being held at the Charlotte County Jail on a $35,000 bond.
Sheriff Bill Prummell issued a public statement criticizing the alleged conduct and saying law enforcement would respond to such allegations when reported in Charlotte County. His statement represented the sheriff’s office’s response to the allegations and did not determine the outcome of the criminal case. A court will ultimately decide whether the charge is proven.
Under Florida law, sexual activities involving animals are addressed through Florida Statute § 828.126. The statute defines prohibited sexual contact with an animal as conduct involving sexual gratification, abuse, or financial gain, including specifically defined forms of contact involving an animal.
Knowingly engaging in sexual contact with an animal is prohibited under the law. This section is a second-degree felony. The law also includes other related offenses involving allowing, facilitating, recording, or distributing prohibited acts involving animals.
Legal Status and Remaining Questions in the Case
Although Nummerdor has been arrested and charged, the case remains at the allegation stage. Public reports and the sheriff’s office announcement confirm the arrest and initial bond information, but the reviewed material does not confirm later court developments such as a plea, trial date, or additional prosecutor filings.
Several important questions remain unresolved as the legal process continues. These include whether prosecutors have filed formal charging documents beyond the initial arrest charge, whether Nummerdor has entered a plea, and whether investigators have fully examined and presented the digital evidence they collected in court. Other unresolved issues include whether the dog was examined, removed from the home, or placed under the care of an animal welfare organization, as well as whether investigators will pursue any additional charges connected to recording or possessing images.
The publicly available information reviewed does not establish a motive, medical explanation, mental-health explanation, personal history, or prior criminal history related to Nummerdor. Such issues should not be assumed based only on allegations or social media claims.
Florida law also provides that a person convicted under the animal sexual activity statute may face restrictions on owning, possessing, controlling, or living with animals for a minimum period of five years following conviction or certain qualifying court outcomes. These consequences apply only after a legal finding or qualifying disposition, not simply after an arrest.
At this point, Malia Elizabeth Nummerdor has been accused of violating Florida’s law regarding sexual activity involving animals, but she remains legally presumed innocent unless prosecutors prove the charge beyond a reasonable doubt in court. The evidence, arguments from both sides, and final outcome will be determined through the judicial process.
