The comment came during what began as a lighthearted conversation about the 2026 Emmy Awards, then shifted into one of the most candid public statements Guthrie has made about her mother’s disappearance in months.
Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her longtime home in the Catalina Foothills area near Tucson in the early morning hours of February 1, after a family member dropped her off the previous night around 9:45 p.m.
When she failed to appear for her regular Sunday church service the next morning, a friend alerted the family, who reported her missing around noon.
What followed has become one of the more closely watched missing-persons investigations in recent memory, driven in large part by Savannah Guthrie’s public profile and her repeated, raw appeals for information.
What Investigators Know About Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance
Authorities have pieced together a detailed but still incomplete timeline of the night Nancy Guthrie vanished. Records show her doorbell camera disconnected at approximately 1:47 a.m. on February 1, with software detecting a person on camera roughly 25 minutes later.
Around 2:28 a.m., her pacemaker disconnected from its paired phone app, a detail investigators have treated as significant in establishing when she may have been taken from the home.
The FBI later recovered footage from that camera showing a masked, armed individual tampering with the device in the early morning hours, an image that has since become central to the public search for answers.
The FBI has described the individual in the footage as male, between 5 feet 9 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall, with an average build.
He was seen wearing a ski mask, gloves, and a black 25-liter Ozark Trail Hiker Pack backpack, along with what appeared to be a holstered handgun that Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos described as having some fairly unusual characteristics.
Investigators have since canvassed gun shops in the Tucson area and reviewed thousands of hours of additional surveillance footage from the surrounding neighborhood, but as of the most recent public updates, no suspect has been formally identified.
Two purported ransom notes have also surfaced during the investigation, though authorities have not confirmed their authenticity.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department made the full contents of both notes public in August, hoping that their distinctive language might help someone recognize the writer.
The second note, addressed to the Guthrie family, claimed that Nancy’s death had been unintentional and stated that the writer had not fully grasped the seriousness of her physical condition beforehand. It closed with the phrase, “We are truly sorry.”
Guthrie said in March that she believed the notes were genuine and that the family had responded to them, though no confirmed break in the case has followed.
The FBI has also confirmed it is analyzing mixed DNA evidence recovered from Guthrie’s home, including a hair sample, as part of the ongoing forensic review.

Janney told reporters she thinks about Nancy Guthrie and her family every single day, a comment that quickly made its way back to Savannah and prompted her live, unscripted response the following morning.
Visibly moved, Guthrie thanked Janney directly on air before turning the moment into a renewed call for public help. “We just want our mom home, give her a proper goodbye, that’s all,” Guthrie said, describing the pain that has continued to weigh on her entire family.

Nancy Guthrie was widowed at 46 after her husband, Charles Guthrie, died suddenly of a heart attack in 1988, leaving her to raise Savannah and her two older siblings, Annie and Camron, largely on her own. Nancy has previously said on “Today” that the family became especially close in the aftermath, noting that after her husband’s death, “we just gravitated toward each other.”
