Jim Thornton’s more than decade-long run as the announcer of “Wheel of Fortune” has come to an abrupt end.

Sony Pictures Television Studios confirmed that Thornton has been fired from the long-running game show after an internal investigation into allegations that first surfaced following an incident on a commercial flight in May.

The termination comes just days after the studio initially suspended him while it looked into the claims, capping off a fast-moving few weeks that upended one of daytime television’s most recognizable voices.

Thornton, 61, had served as the show’s announcer since 2011, stepping into the role after the death of longtime “Wheel of Fortune” announcer Charlie O’Donnell.

In addition to his work on the flagship series, Thornton also lent his voice to the primetime spinoff “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” and had previously worked as a substitute announcer on “The Price Is Right,” making him a familiar presence across daytime and syndicated programming for well over a decade before this controversy began.

According to a statement Sony Pictures Television Studios provided to multiple outlets, including TMZ and The Hollywood Reporter, the company’s decision to terminate Thornton followed a formal internal review.

“Following a thorough investigation, Jim Thornton’s employment with ‘Wheel of Fortune’ has been terminated, effective immediately,” a company spokesperson said.

The statement did not detail the investigation’s findings, but it marked a clear escalation from the studio’s earlier posture just days earlier.

That earlier stance came on Tuesday, September 1, when Sony first confirmed that Thornton had been suspended from the show while the company looked into what it described only as “allegations concerning” the announcer.

“We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton,” the studio said at the time in a statement shared with outlets including TODAY and The Hollywood Reporter. “He has been suspended from ‘Wheel of Fortune’ and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation.”

Notably, Thornton had still appeared on a pre-taped episode of the show that same evening, underscoring just how quickly the situation escalated in the days that followed.

Sources with knowledge of the show’s production have indicated that Thornton will not be heard on “Wheel of Fortune” when its new season premieres on September 14, with an interim announcer stepping in to revoice segments Thornton had already recorded for upcoming episodes.

As of this reporting, Sony has not named a permanent replacement for the role, leaving one of the most recognizable jobs in game show television in flux heading into the new season.

What Allegedly Happened on the Flight

The allegations that triggered Thornton’s suspension and eventual firing trace back to an incident TMZ first reported that took place aboard an American Airlines flight to Los Angeles back in May.

According to that reporting, a fellow passenger seated near Thornton, who was reportedly wearing a “Wheel of Fortune” jacket at the time, complained to a flight attendant after allegedly seeing disturbing material displayed on his open laptop screen.

The passenger described what she saw as images and text exchanges that appeared to come from a chat room associated with pedophilia, according to TMZ’s account of her complaint.

Sources with direct knowledge of the situation told TMZ that the flight’s pilot contacted law enforcement ahead of landing, and officers met Thornton at the gate once the plane arrived at Los Angeles International Airport.

Thornton’s attorney, Allison Hart, later gave TMZ a detailed statement about what happened during the encounter with police. “Jim did not engage in any illegal conduct, was not arrested, and has not been charged with any crime,” Hart said.

She added further detail about the length and outcome of the police interaction, stating, “When questioned about the complaint made by a fellow passenger on the flight, law enforcement spoke to him for five minutes or less, immediately determined that no wrongdoing had occurred, and told my client he was free to go.”

Hart also offered an explanation for what Thornton had allegedly been doing on his laptop at the time of the complaint, framing it as connected to personal advocacy work rather than any intentional wrongdoing.

She told TMZ that Thornton had “become active in suicide-prevention advocacy since losing a close family member to suicide two years ago and he has spent time visiting chat rooms offering support to individuals suffering from suicidal ideation.”

According to that account, Thornton had mistakenly navigated to the wrong website while attempting to access a legitimate suicide-prevention forum, and left the site once he realized the error.

TMZ, however, reported that timestamps captured in photos of his screen appeared to show him remaining on the page for close to an hour, a detail that has added complexity to how the incident has been publicly understood.

An Abrupt End to a Longtime Broadcasting Run

The speed of Thornton’s fall from suspension to firing, unfolding over the course of roughly a week, reflects how quickly the situation escalated once photos purportedly taken from his laptop screen began circulating publicly.

TMZ published images on September 3 that it reported were tied to the flight incident, and within days, Sony moved from an open investigation to a final termination decision.

Neither Thornton nor Hart has issued a public statement specifically addressing the termination, and Hart did not provide TMZ with additional comment when the firing was confirmed.

Thornton’s departure marks a significant change for a show that has leaned heavily on continuity in its on-air voices over the decades, having employed only a small handful of announcers throughout its long broadcast history.

His 2011 arrival followed the passing of Charlie O’Donnell, who had been the voice of “Wheel of Fortune” for decades before his death, and Thornton had become a familiar fixture alongside host Ryan Seacrest and the show’s rotating cast of contestants in the years since.

With the new season set to premiere on September 14 without him, and no permanent successor yet named, “Wheel of Fortune” now faces the task of introducing a new voice to audiences who have grown accustomed to Thornton’s for well over a decade, even as the circumstances surrounding his exit continue to generate scrutiny and questions that remain publicly unresolved.
