What should have been one of the most festive nights of the American summer ended in panic and heartbreak in Brooklyn, after gunfire erupted in a crowded residential courtyard near Coney Island’s boardwalk on the night of July 4th, leaving eight people wounded, including four children.
The shooting unfolded just after 10:30 p.m. near West 30th Street and Surf Avenue, an area typically filled with holiday crowds, fireworks celebrations, and families gathering after Independence Day events. Instead, the night was shattered by rapid gunfire that sent people scrambling for cover as police rushed into a scene of chaos and confusion.
A Family Cookout Interrupted by Gunfire
According to police accounts, the shooting took place in the courtyard of an apartment complex where a family barbecue was underway. Investigators say a man wearing dark clothing and a mask approached the gathering and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
There was no reported argument or warning before the attack, making the violence even more shocking to investigators and residents. The courtyard, normally a quiet shared space for families, was suddenly transformed into an emergency zone as bullets struck both adults and children gathered for the holiday.

The victims ranged widely in age, from young children to adults in their 30s. Among the adult victims were a 33-year-old man, a 37-year-old man, a 25-year-old woman, and a 21-year-old woman. The 21-year-old woman was critically wounded after being shot in the chest, while the remaining victims were listed in stable condition following treatment. All eight victims were transported to local hospitals across Brooklyn, where medical teams worked through the night to stabilize the injured.

Police confirmed that a firearm was recovered near the scene, though they have not publicly confirmed whether it was used in the shooting or how it was obtained. No arrests had been made as of the latest updates, and investigators were still searching for the suspect or suspects involved.
