For years, fans of Madonna have waited for the Queen of Pop to bring her extraordinary life to the big screen. There was a script, a studio, an actress lined up to play her, and even plans for Madonna herself to sit in the director’s chair. Then, suddenly, the project disappeared from view, leaving many wondering what had happened behind the scenes.
Now, Madonna herself has finally shed light on why her passion project stalled, and according to the music icon, the answer boils down to a familiar Hollywood problem: money.
Speaking in a new cover story for Interview Magazine, the seven-time Grammy winner revealed that a disagreement with Universal Pictures over the film’s budget led to a breakdown in their relationship, effectively putting the long-awaited biopic on hold.
In the candid conversation, the singer detailed years of work that went into the project, the struggles that followed, and why she remains determined to tell her story on her own terms.
Madonna Says Universal Couldn’t Embrace the Scale of Her Vision

Madonna explained that the project was far more than a passing idea. It represented four years of work, with two years devoted to writing the screenplay and another two spent collaborating with Universal on everything from casting to production costs.
“I was supposed to make a movie about my life,” Madonna told Interview Magazine. “I worked on my script for two years and spent two years at Universal Studios with the line producers doing budgeting and casting.”
But according to the “Material Girl” singer, the relationship eventually hit a wall over finances.
“I had a falling out, me and Universal, regarding budget,” she said.
For Madonna, trimming down the story was never an option. She believes her journey, from arriving in New York City with little money to becoming one of the most influential women in music history, deserves an equally ambitious treatment.
“I’ve had an extraordinary life,” she said. “I’ve had a huge life, so I needed a big budget.” The singer said the studio struggled to understand her vision. “They couldn’t get their heads around it,” she explained.
Determined to make things work, Madonna proposed filming in Serbia as a cost-saving measure. However, she said the suggestion was met with skepticism rather than enthusiasm.
“Maybe they just didn’t believe in me,” she said.
According to Madonna, one concern raised by the studio was whether she would even stay in Serbia long enough to complete the production.
“One of their first reactions was, ‘We don’t believe you’d stay in Serbia more than four days,’” she recalled.
The remark caught the singer off guard. “And I said, ‘Did you read the script?’ My whole life has been survival. I’m not going there for a holiday.”
The comments offer a rare glimpse into the tensions that can arise between creative ambition and studio economics, even when the artist involved is one of the biggest stars in entertainment history.
Julia Garner Was Set to Play Madonna Before the Project Stalled
The film was first announced in 2020, with Madonna making it clear from the outset that she intended to direct it herself. At the time, she stressed that no one else could tell her story with the authenticity she desired.
Speaking previously about the project, Madonna said, “No one’s going to tell my story but me.”
The screenplay underwent several stages of development. Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody worked on earlier drafts before writer Erin Cressida Wilson later joined the project.
By 2022, Emmy-winning actress Julia Garner had emerged as the chosen star to portray Madonna after reportedly beating out several high-profile contenders for the role.
The casting generated considerable excitement among fans. Garner, best known for her work in Ozark and Inventing Anna, was widely viewed as an intriguing choice to bring the pop icon’s younger years to life.
However, in January 2023, reports emerged that the movie had been shelved as Madonna shifted her attention toward her Celebration Tour.
At the time, many assumed the pause was temporary. But Madonna’s latest comments reveal that the problems ran much deeper.
Despite the setback, the singer indicated that her relationship with Garner remained intact. The actress has also previously expressed optimism about the project.
In an interview with W Magazine earlier this year, Garner said, “I can’t say too much about it, but yes, it’s a work in progress.” That statement has helped keep hope alive among fans who still want to see the story reach the screen.
Netflix Entered the Picture, but New Challenges Emerged

After her partnership with Universal unraveled, Madonna said she entered a period of uncertainty before another opportunity presented itself. “I was in limbo,” she admitted.
Then Netflix approached her about reimagining her life story as a series rather than a film. While the format offered more room to explore decades of music, fame, controversy, and reinvention, the transition proved more complicated than she anticipated.
One of the biggest hurdles involved the screenplay she had already spent years developing. According to Madonna, she was unable to use the script she wrote for Universal unless she purchased it back from the studio.
“I’d have to buy it from them for an extortionist’s price,” she said. “That’s just the way it goes.” She then began trying to understand how a television series would work and discovered that the process was vastly different from making a movie.
“It’s a very, very different process,” she explained. Finding the right creative partners proved difficult. “You have to meet a lot of writers and find the right showrunner,” she said. “And I couldn’t find one.”
After another eight or nine months without meaningful progress, Madonna decided to step away and focus her attention elsewhere.
“I was like, ‘Good thing I have another job because I need to work, I need to create,’” she said. That creative outlet became music.
The singer is currently preparing to release Confessions II, her upcoming studio album and the sequel to her 2005 hit record Confessions on a Dance Floor. The album is scheduled to arrive on July 3 and represents another chapter in a career defined by constant reinvention.
Even with the biopic stalled, Madonna appears far from finished with the idea of bringing her life story to audiences. Her comments suggest that while the path has been complicated, her determination remains intact.
After all, if there is one theme that has consistently defined Madonna’s career, it is resilience. As she reminded Interview Magazine, survival has always been at the center of her story. “My whole life has been survival,” she said.
And if history has taught fans anything, it is that Madonna rarely gives up on the things she believes in. Whether her story ultimately arrives as a film, a limited series, or something entirely different, the Queen of Pop seems intent on ensuring it is told in her voice and on her terms.
