For many people, the idea of moving abroad begins long before they pack a suitcase. It starts with a search: “Move to Canada,” “Living in Australia,” “Emigrate to Japan,” or “Best countries to relocate to.”

Those searches reveal something important about global ambitions. People are looking for new opportunities, different lifestyles, career possibilities, cultural experiences, and sometimes a complete change of scenery.

But online interest does not automatically mean people are moving successfully. A country appearing at the top of relocation searches does not mean everyone can easily obtain residency, find work, or build a new life there.

A 2025 Relocation Index  by international moving company 1st Move International analyzed Google search data between September 2024 and August 2025 to identify the countries people were most interested in moving to.

The study examined searches related to phrases such as “Move to,” “Living in,” and “Emigrate to.”

The results placed Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Japan, Portugal, Costa Rica, Spain, the Netherlands, and Thailand among the most searched relocation destinations worldwide.

Here are the countries capturing the attention of people dreaming about life abroad.

Canada continues to dominate online relocation interest. According to the 2025 Relocation Index, Canada recorded 269,220 relocation-related searches, placing it first among countries people researched when considering a move abroad.

The country’s appeal comes from several factors: its reputation for natural landscapes, multicultural cities, public services, and immigration pathways that attract workers, families, and international students.

Canada’s immigration system is also one reason it receives so much attention. The country publishes immigration targets and maintains multiple pathways to permanent residence, although eligibility depends on factors such as qualifications, experience, language ability, and personal circumstances.

Search interest, however, does not mean every person searching “move to Canada” will eventually relocate. Some people may simply be researching possibilities or comparing destinations.

Canada’s top position reflects the strength of its global image as a place where many people imagine building a future.

Australia

Australia ranked second with 207,900 relocation-related searches. The country has long attracted international attention because of its outdoor lifestyle, major cities, career opportunities, and English-speaking environment.

Cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth are frequently associated with international careers and cultural diversity, while the country’s beaches and natural attractions add to its global appeal.

Australia also has structured migration programs, including skilled migration pathways. However, moving there often requires careful planning because eligibility depends on factors such as occupation, qualifications, and visa requirements.

The country’s popularity shows that many people are not only searching for jobs abroad—they are also searching for a different way of living.

Ireland

Ireland ranked third with 179,400 relocation searches. The country has attracted attention from people interested in its culture, history, English-speaking environment, and employment opportunities.

Ireland’s ties to major industries, including technology and international business, have increased its visibility among workers looking abroad.

The country also appeals to people who want access to Europe while living in a smaller country with strong cultural identity.

However, relocation requires more than interest. Potential movers still need to understand employment opportunities, housing availability, residency requirements, and the cost of daily life.

Ireland’s ranking shows that people are increasingly looking beyond the world’s largest countries when considering where to settle.

New Zealand

New Zealand ranked fourth with 177,700 searches from people interested in relocation. The country often attracts people looking for a slower pace of life, outdoor experiences, and a smaller population compared with larger nations.

Its reputation for natural beauty, including mountains, coastlines, and outdoor activities, has made it a popular destination among people imagining a lifestyle change.

New Zealand also has immigration pathways designed around skills and workforce needs, but those pathways come with requirements that vary depending on the applicant.

For many people searching about New Zealand, the attraction is not just employment, it is the possibility of a different daily routine.

Japan

Japan ranked fifth with 172,880 relocation-related searches. Japan’s global influence is difficult to ignore. Its technology sector, education system, traditions, cities, and popular culture have made it one of the world’s most recognizable countries.

For some potential movers, Japan represents career opportunities. For others, it represents a chance to experience a completely different culture.

However, relocating to Japan requires understanding its visa categories, employment requirements, and social expectations.

The country’s popularity shows how relocation decisions are not always based only on economics. Culture and lifestyle can be just as powerful.

Portugal

Portugal ranked sixth with 170,030 relocation searches. The country has gained attention among people researching European relocation options.

Its appeal often comes from its coastal cities, cultural heritage, climate, and connection to the wider European region.

However, popularity does not remove the practical challenges of moving abroad. Potential residents still need to research residency rules, employment options, housing, and local expenses.

Portugal’s ranking reflects a broader trend: many people are exploring destinations based on lifestyle as much as traditional career opportunities.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica reached seventh place with 127,880 relocation-related searches. Unlike some of the larger countries on this list, Costa Rica’s appeal comes from its reputation as a lifestyle destination.

People researching the country may be interested in its climate, natural environment, and the chance to live outside traditional migration hubs.

However, search data does not reveal whether someone is planning a permanent move, temporary stay, retirement, remote work arrangement, or simply exploring options.

Costa Rica’s appearance in the ranking shows that relocation interest is not only about size or economic power.

Spain

Spain ranked eighth with 127,670 relocation searches.  Spain remains a country many people associate with culture, food, history, and lifestyle.

Its cities, coastal regions, and European location make it attractive to people considering a move abroad. For potential residents, however, the reality of relocating depends on nationality, employment, finances, and legal requirements.

Spain’s presence in the ranking reflects the continuing appeal of European countries that combine cultural richness with everyday lifestyle attractions.

The Netherlands

The Netherlands ranked ninth with 127,100 relocation searches. The country attracts attention because of its international business environment, universities, infrastructure, and global connections.

Cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Utrecht are known for attracting international workers and students. For many people researching the Netherlands, career opportunities are a major factor.

However, like every relocation destination, moving there requires understanding visa options, housing conditions, and local requirements.

Thailand

Thailand completed the top 10 with 126,960 relocation-related searches.

The country has long attracted international interest because of its culture, tourism industry, affordability discussions, and regional importance in Southeast Asia.

People searching about Thailand may have very different goals, including retirement, remote work, business opportunities, or simply exploring a different lifestyle. The country’s ranking highlights how modern relocation interest extends beyond traditional Western destinations.

Why People Search These Countries Before Moving

The countries topping relocation searches share several common themes.

Many offer a combination of:

  • Career opportunities
  • International communities
  • Cultural experiences
  • Lifestyle appeal
  • Education options
  • Long-term residency possibilities

But the most searched country is not automatically the best choice for everyone.

Moving abroad involves much more than choosing a popular destination. Housing costs, immigration rules, job opportunities, language, and personal goals all influence whether a move is realistic.

The biggest lesson from global relocation searches is that millions of people are thinking beyond their current borders.

A search may only take a few seconds, but turning that dream into a successful move requires research, preparation, and a realistic understanding of what life abroad will actually look like.
