The Post: The 10 Most Visited U.S. Cities by Overseas Travelers—and What Makes Each Stand Out first appeared on Crafting Your Home
From New York’s brownstones to Honolulu’s open-air living, America’s most popular cities with overseas travelers offer much more than famous landmarks. According to 2024 data from the U.S. International Trade Administration’s National Travel and Tourism Office, 35.2 million overseas travelers made 52.8 million city visits across the United States.
Because many travelers visited more than one destination during the same trip, these figures represent city visits rather than unique visitors. The federal ranking also covers overseas travelers, meaning visitors from Canada and Mexico are not included.
Here are the 10 U.S. city metropolitan areas that attracted the most overseas visitors in 2024, plus the design, architecture, and lifestyle details that make each destination memorable.
1. New York City — 9.525 Million Visitors
New York City towers over the rest of the list with 9.525 million overseas visits, representing 27.09% of overseas travelers to the United States.
Its appeal is easy to understand. Beyond museums, markets, window displays, and neighborhood architecture, New York offers an extraordinary mix of homes. Prewar apartments, brownstones, lofts, compact studios, and townhouses all contribute to the city’s visual identity.
For design-minded travelers, simply moving from neighborhood to neighborhood can feel like browsing an enormous collection of architectural styles and globally influenced interiors.
2. Miami — 5.161 Million Visitors
Miami took second place with 5.161 million overseas visitors, accounting for 14.68% of the market measured by the federal survey.
The city’s look is strongly connected to its climate and coastal setting. Art Deco geometry, pastel façades, tropical plantings, patios, natural textures, and colorful tilework create a style that feels unmistakably Miami.
Florida also recorded the largest one-year numerical increase in overseas visitors among U.S. states, gaining 927,000 visitors between 2023 and 2024.

3. Los Angeles — 4.430 Million Visitors
Los Angeles welcomed 4.430 million overseas visitors, giving it third place and a 12.60% share.
Hollywood and beaches may provide the instantly recognizable image, but Los Angeles also offers remarkable residential variety.
Spanish Colonial Revival homes, midcentury-modern landmarks, bungalows, hillside houses, and contemporary spaces built around indoor-outdoor living all contribute to the city’s appeal.
Add shopping, design, entertainment, and cultural variety, and Los Angeles becomes much more than a movie-industry destination.
4. Orlando — 3.931 Million Visitors
With 3.931 million overseas visitors, Orlando ranked fourth and captured an 11.18% share.
Theme parks are central to Orlando’s international reputation, giving the city especially strong family-travel appeal.
That playful sense of escape also shows up in resort landscaping, cheerful vacation-home aesthetics, family-friendly spaces, and imaginative design.
The federal data do not specify that every Orlando visitor came for theme parks, but the city remains widely identified with America’s large-scale entertainment attractions.
5. Las Vegas — 2.588 Million Visitors

Las Vegas attracted 2.588 million overseas visitors, placing fifth with a 7.36% share.
Few American destinations embrace spectacle quite like Las Vegas.
Dramatic lighting, statement interiors, glamorous finishes, elaborate hotels, and entertainment venues have helped create a city built around visual impact.
But beyond the Strip’s maximalism, Southern Nevada also inspires a quieter design vocabulary featuring warm neutrals, stone, glass, and landscaping suited to the desert environment.
6. San Francisco — 2.405 Million Visitors
San Francisco ranked sixth with 2.405 million overseas visitors, representing 6.84% of the total measured.
The city combines famous landmarks with some of America’s most recognizable residential architecture.
Victorian and Edwardian houses, bay windows, steep streets, compact interiors, and the colorful Painted Ladies give San Francisco an unmistakable personality.
Its dense neighborhoods also make clever use of limited space, proving memorable design doesn’t require enormous rooms.
7. Washington, D.C. — 1.761 Million Visitors
Washington, D.C., received 1.761 million overseas visitors, placing seventh with a 5.01% share.
Monuments, national museums, political history, and government landmarks form the backbone of its international appeal.
Yet residential neighborhoods offer their own architectural attractions.
Georgetown row houses, Capitol Hill brick homes, formal gardens, and Federal-style details give the capital a stately look that feels closely connected to American history.
8. Honolulu — 1.494 Million Visitors
Honolulu ranked eighth with 1.494 million overseas visitors, accounting for 4.25% of the total.
Its setting creates a lifestyle dramatically different from the mainland cities on this list.
Tropical plantings, lanais, open-air spaces, ocean views, and the close relationship between buildings and the surrounding landscape help define Honolulu’s residential character.
The city also serves as a gateway to Oʻahu’s outdoor environment, food culture, and island pace of life. When discussing local design, however, it is important to distinguish place-based architecture from treating Native Hawaiian cultural elements as decorative trends.
9. Boston — 1.389 Million Visitors
Boston welcomed 1.389 million overseas visitors, putting it ninth with a 3.95% share.
Historic streets and neighborhoods define the city’s character.
Brick row homes, Georgian and Federal details, bay windows, built-ins, narrow streets, and compact gardens create an atmosphere that feels deeply connected to the past.
Boston’s appeal also combines American history, universities, sports, waterfront neighborhoods, and a walkable urban core.

10. Chicago — 1.371 Million Visitors
Chicago rounds out the top 10 with 1.371 million overseas visitors, or 3.90% of the federal overseas-visitation total.
Architecture is one of the city’s defining attractions. Chicago is associated with skyscraper innovation, Prairie School design, Frank Lloyd Wright’s regional legacy, and a strong contemporary design culture.
Its lakefront setting and varied neighborhoods broaden the experience beyond downtown, with everything from high-rise living to brick two-flats and greystones contributing to the city’s architectural story.
Together, these 10 destinations show just how varied the American city experience can be, from tropical patios and desert resorts to historic row houses, soaring skylines, and compact urban homes.
