A Sikh truck driver survived a stabbing at a Wyoming interstate rest area, and a man arrested after the attack is facing an attempted first-degree murder charge, according to authorities and court records.
The Sept. 13 incident happened at the Bitter Creek Rest Area along Interstate 80 in Sweetwater County. Investigators have not announced a motive, and officials said there is no established finding that the attack was a hate crime.
The case has drawn attention from Sikh community members and others concerned about safety, while law enforcement continues to investigate.
Deputies respond to rest area stabbing.
Sweetwater County deputies were called at about 3:27 a.m. Sept. 13 to the eastbound Bitter Creek Rest Area near Interstate 80 milepost 144 after a reported stabbing, according to the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities said the victim was found with multiple cuts and stab wounds and received medical care.
Court documents and an affidavit filed later described the extent of the alleged injuries, stating that the victim suffered 17 lacerations, including wounds to the neck and chest.
The victim survived and was reported to be recovering.
Suspect arrested after vehicle located.
Authorities said a man identified as Andrew Kris Bzdak was taken into custody after Wyoming Highway Patrol located his tractor-trailer near Rawlins.
Bzdak faces one count of attempted first-degree murder. The charge is an allegation, and prosecutors must prove the case through the court process.
According to charging documents, prosecutors allege that Bzdak intended to kill the victim and took a major step toward doing so.
As of Sept. 18 and 19 reporting, Bzdak remained held at the Sweetwater County Detention Center, with bond set at $1 million.
Officials say they have not determined a motive.

One key question in the investigation is why the attack happened.
Sweetwater County officials said investigators had not determined a motive. County officials also said there was no indication at that point that the case was a hate crime.
That distinction is important as community members discuss the attack. Concerns about possible bias or safety risks are separate from an official finding about motive. Investigators have not publicly concluded that the victim was targeted because of his religion or background.
The investigation is ongoing.
Why the case has drawn community attention
The victim is a Sikh truck driver, and the attack has caused concerns among some Sikh community members about safety for South Asian truck drivers and others who spend much of their time traveling.
Truck stops and interstate rest areas are key gathering points for drivers on long routes, making safety at these locations a concern for many people who rely on them while traveling.
Community reactions have included calls to address the safety concerns some drivers face. However, authorities have continued to emphasize that the motive in this specific case has not been established
What happens next
The criminal case will move forward through the court system as investigators continue reviewing evidence.
Officials have not released further information regarding what may have led to the confrontation or whether they could file further charges.
Authorities have also continued to separate confirmed facts from unanswered questions. At this stage, the confirmed details include the reported stabbing, the arrest, the attempted first-degree murder charge, and the ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
For readers following the case, updates from law enforcement and court proceedings will provide the next information about how the investigation develops.
