The caption paired the visuals with a message that read like something straight out of a love letter. “Her to whom all is owed. The great joy of being led on a path of righteous humility is mine.
She-the lioness – Me-the adult cub / recipient of 21 trips around the sun with my SuperBuddy,” he wrote, casting himself as the grateful student to Susan’s guiding presence.
The post immediately drew a flood of warm reactions in the comments, with fans calling them their favorite couple and celebrating the milestone alongside the pair.
It is far from the first time Downey has used the anniversary as an occasion for a public love note. In 2023, he marked 18 years of marriage by recreating their wedding day photo, swapping his tuxedo for a T-shirt and Susan’s bridal bouquet for a bundle of sunflowers, captioning it “18 years, love still in bloom!!”
A year before that, on their 17th anniversary, he called her his “bedrock, touchstone and lucky stars to boot.” Each tribute has its own flavor, but the throughline has always been the same: a public acknowledgment of just how much Susan has shaped his life.
That sentiment was on full display back at the 2024 Oscars as well, when Downey won Best Supporting Actor for “Oppenheimer” and used part of his acceptance speech to thank his family, including a moment of classic Downey humor when he told the audience, “I’d like to thank my veterinarian, I meant wife, Susan Downey over there.”
It was a joke, but it landed because it echoed something Downey has said seriously many times before: that Susan has been central to both his personal recovery and his professional resurgence over the past two decades.

Robert and Susan’s story began on the set of the 2003 psychological thriller “Gothika,” where Robert starred alongside Halle Berry while Susan produced the film.
Downey proposed on November 5, 2003, the night before her 30th birthday, and the two were married less than two years later on August 27, 2005.
What started as a workplace connection eventually grew into one of Hollywood’s more unusual power partnerships, since Robert and Susan didn’t just build a marriage; they built a company.
In 2010, the couple founded Team Downey, a production company that has gone on to work on major projects including the “Sherlock Holmes” franchise.
Susan has said that landing on the name took some trial and error, joking in a past interview with The Hollywood Reporter that they toyed with other options, including one that combined both of their names into something along the lines of “RoSuDo,” before eventually settling on the simpler Team Downey.

In a past interview with People, Susan explained the concept in her own words, saying, “We do have a two-week rule, which often feels too long, but we don’t go more than two weeks without seeing each other and the family being together.”
Given how demanding both of their schedules can be, particularly Robert’s, the rule functions as a hard limit designed to keep the family connected no matter how chaotic their respective projects get.
Susan has acknowledged that keeping to the rule requires flexibility rather than rigid long-term planning, since so much of what the family navigates is inherently unpredictable.
“You keep the basic rule of two weeks, and then you don’t try and think too far ahead, because so much of what we do is oddly unpredictable,” she said, adding that unexpected complications like illness or production shutdowns can upend even the best-laid plans.
She also noted that her role as a producer gives her more flexibility than Robert has as an actor, since she isn’t tied to being in front of the camera and can often adjust her location to make the family’s togetherness work.
“Fortunately, we prefer to be a traveling circus when we can be,” she said, summing up how the family approaches life on the move.
Twenty-one years after meeting on a film set, Robert and Susan Downey have built something that spans a marriage, a family, and a shared business, all while keeping their bond intentional rather than assumed.
