Investigators are reviewing two drone drops that allegedly carried drugs, phones, and other contraband into two Hudson Valley prisons. No victim has been reported, and no suspect has been publicly identified after packages were found at Wallkill Correctional Facility and Sing Sing Correctional Facility.
Drone Drop Reported at Wallkill
The first reported incident happened at Wallkill Correctional Facility in Ulster County. Officers said a drone flew over the prison yard before dropping a green plastic-wrapped package in late May. Staff recovered the package before officials reported any wider movement inside the facility. An X-ray later showed several cellphones, SIM cards, charging cables, pills, and marijuana inside.
Sing Sing Package Found in Yard
A second drone drop happened at Sing Sing Correctional Facility in Ossining earlier this month. An officer reportedly saw a drone fly over the prison before it released another package into the yard.
Officials said that the package contained more than 500 grams of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana. It also included pills, Apple earphones, and a phone charging cord.
Phones Add Security Concerns
The cellphones and SIM cards found in the Wallkill package may carry serious security concerns. Unauthorized phones can allow inmates to bypass monitored prison communication systems. That risk can extend outside the prison walls. Illegal phones may be used to contact witnesses, victims, relatives, associates, or people connected to criminal activity.
Drugs Can Fuel Prison Violence

The suspected marijuana and pills also create safety problems for staff and inmates. Drugs inside prisons can lead to debts, threats, fights, and medical emergencies. Pills carry additional risks because their contents may be unknown. Officials said unknown pills recovered from Wallkill were sent for testing.
A single package can affect an entire housing unit if contraband enters circulation. Staff must recover the items quickly, secure the area, and identify any intended recipients.
Earlier Drone Case Included Knives
The Wallkill and Sing Sing cases follow other drone incidents reported at New York prisons this year. In March, staff at Marcy Correctional Facility recovered a package dropped by a drone inside the secure perimeter. The Marcy Correctional Facility package included knives, a cellphone, bandannas, hair clippers, chemically treated paper, and more than a pound of green leafy material.
New York Lawmakers Target Prison Drones
State lawmakers have considered stronger limits on drones near correctional facilities. One proposal would restrict civilian drone use within 500 feet of a correctional facility unless authorized by federal aviation rules. The proposal targets a growing security concern for prisons. Drones are widely available, easy to transport, and capable of carrying small packages.
Investigators Review Possible Connections
Investigators will likely review flight timing, packaging, surveillance footage, prison intelligence, and possible communication between people inside and outside the facilities. Drone drops often require planning. Someone outside must launch or control the drone. Someone inside may know where the package should land.
Hudson Valley Prisons Remain Under Watch
Wallkill and Sing Sing remain under review as investigators work through both incidents. Staff recovered the packages, but the attempted deliveries point to a growing correctional threat.
The cases also show why prison officials are focused on drone detection and enforcement. Drugs, phones, and accessories can change conditions inside a facility fast.
