Apple has finally entered the foldable-phone market, introducing the iPhone Duo as its first foldable iPhone.
Unveiled on September 9, the new device brings a completely different form factor to Apple’s smartphone lineup. Instead of a single fixed screen, the iPhone Duo has an outer display for use when folded and a much larger inner display that appears when the phone opens.
The price reflects its premium position. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States for the 256GB model. Customers can also choose 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage configurations.
A larger iPhone that folds

When closed, the iPhone Duo has a 5.4-inch outer display designed for everyday phone use. Open it up, and the device reveals a 7.6-inch inner display, which Apple says is its largest iPhone display ever.
The inner screen is 50% larger than the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple has also given it a nano-texture finish intended to reduce glare and reflections. Both screens share the same aspect ratio, so content scales consistently between the folded and unfolded positions.
The design aims to give users more screen space without requiring them to carry a separate larger device. Apple specifically highlights activities such as watching content, gaming, and multitasking.
When unfolded, Apple describes the Duo as its thinnest iPhone yet.
Apple built the phone around a new hinge.
A foldable smartphone depends heavily on the mechanism connecting its two halves, and Apple has developed a precision hinge specifically for the Duo.
The company says the hinge is designed to provide a smooth opening and closing experience while supporting the display. The phone also uses a titanium frame and hinge cover.
Apple is offering the iPhone Duo in two finishes: Star White and Night Sky.
The company has also focused on making the device practical for everyday use rather than treating the foldable design simply as a novelty.
iOS has been adapted for the foldable format
The larger display has also prompted Apple to rethink how its software works.
The iPhone Duo runs iOS 27. Apple says it redesigned the operating system to take advantage of the phone’s different orientations and screen configurations.
The larger inner display provides additional space for multitasking, while the phone can still be used in its smaller folded form.
Apple is also bringing Apple Pencil support to the device later this year. The USB-C-compatible Apple Pencil will let users take notes, sketch, and mark up documents on either display.

The A20 Pro powers the Duo.
Under the foldable design is Apple’s A20 Pro chip.
The phone includes a custom vapor chamber for thermal management and a dual-battery architecture. Apple says the combination is designed to deliver the performance expected from its Pro-level hardware while supporting all-day battery life.
The device also includes Apple’s C2 cellular modem system and N1 wireless networking chip.
According to Apple, N1 supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. The C2 modem includes improvements aimed at cellular quality and reliability.
The camera gets some new tricks.
The folding design also changes how the iPhone’s cameras can be used.
The iPhone Duo features a 48MP Fusion Main camera and supports 4K video recording at up to 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision.
Apple has introduced several features that make use of the two displays. Duo Preview, for example, lets people being photographed see a live preview on the outer display, making it easier to check framing and positioning.
The phone can also be propped up for certain photographs and longer video recordings without requiring a separate tripod.
Another feature, Smart Take, uses on-device AI models to analyze a scene and automatically capture a photo when subjects are posing.
Storage can reach 2TB
The entry-level iPhone Duo comes with 256GB of storage, but buyers who need more space have three additional choices: 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB.
In the United States, Apple’s listed prices rise from $1,999 for 256GB to $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB, and $3,199 for 2TB.
That makes the highest-capacity version significantly more expensive than the entry-level model.
When can you buy it?
Apple says preorders for the iPhone Duo will begin on *October 16, with availability starting *October 23.
The phone will launch across more than 70 countries and regions, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam. Apple says another 28 countries and regions will receive it beginning October 30.
The launch puts Apple directly into a foldable-phone market already developed by competitors including Samsung and Huawei. Reuters reports that Apple’s entry is expected to intensify competition in the category, with Samsung already responding to the new challenger.
For Apple, however, the iPhone Duo is not simply another annual update. It introduces a new physical design while retaining the company’s existing software ecosystem.
The $1,999 starting price puts it in a premium position in the iPhone lineup. But the Duo also gives Apple something its conventional smartphones cannot: a device that transforms from a standard-sized phone into a much larger screen simply by opening it.
The first foldable iPhone is now official. The next chapter begins when the iPhone Duo reaches customers in October.
