The post The Most Common Street Name in America Isn’t Main Street first appeared on Crafting Your Home.
If someone asked you to name the most common street in America, Main Street would be one of the first answers that come to mind.
It is the classic American street name, appearing in small towns, busy downtowns, and fictional addresses. The phrase “123 Main Street” has become so familiar that many people assume Main Street must be the country’s most common street name.
But the answer depends on how you count the streets. Historical Census-based figures put Second Street, or 2nd Street, ahead of Main Street, while other datasets counting addresses have produced a different result.
Here is why this familiar American street name has an unexpected rival.
Second Street Has a Surprising History

A historical list of common American street names, based on U.S. Census Bureau data published in 1993, counted 10,866 Second Streets when “Second” and “2nd” were combined.
Third Street followed with 10,131, while First Street had 9,898. Main Street ranked seventh, with 7,644 occurrences.
That raises an interesting question: How can Second Street be more common than First Street?
One explanation is the way towns developed their street layouts. In many communities, the first major road was given a descriptive name, such as Main Street, Front Street, or Center Street. Numbered streets could then begin with Second Street.
As a result, some towns ended up with a Second Street without having a corresponding First Street nearby.

Why Main Street Remains So Familiar
Even if Main Street doesn’t lead every historical street-name count, its cultural significance is hard to miss.
Traditionally, Main Street has represented the commercial heart of many American communities. Shops, restaurants, banks, post offices, and other local businesses often cluster along with it.
Over time, the name became a symbol of small-town life and local business. It also became a familiar feature of American films, books, and everyday expressions.
That cultural visibility may explain why people instinctively choose Main Street when asked to name a common American road.
However, an important distinction exists between counting streets and counting addresses.
In 2022, ATTOM Data Solutions reported nearly 485,000 addresses on Main Streets, compared with 207,899 addresses on 2nd Street alone. These figures count addresses, not individual streets, so they can’t be directly compared with the historical Census-based list.
