Attraction does not always look like obvious flirting. Sometimes an interested person may become unusually quiet, laugh more than usual, ask unexpectedly personal questions, or seem slightly awkward during an otherwise ordinary conversation. These behaviors can stand out because they differ from the person’s usual way of interacting. Still, an important distinction exists between a possible sign of attraction and evidence that someone is attracted to you. Research on interpersonal attraction shows that behavior and attraction are related, but the relationship is not strong enough to make individual behaviors reliable proof.

Here are nine behaviors that can sometimes appear when a woman is attracted to someone.

She Becomes Unusually Quiet Around You

One potentially confusing behavior is a sudden change in how talkative someone becomes. A woman who is normally comfortable in conversation may become quieter, hesitate before answering, or appear more self-conscious when speaking with someone she finds attractive. That does not mean nervousness automatically indicates romantic interest. People can become quiet because they are tired, distracted, uncertain about the situation, or simply less comfortable with a particular person. Many factors influence social behavior, so the change becomes more informative when it is specific to your interactions and occurs repeatedly.

A study published in Psychological Science found substantial differences in how clearly individuals communicated romantic interest, with some people being easier to read than others and some apparently masking their intentions. The useful question, therefore, is not “Does she seem nervous?” but “Does her behavior consistently change around me compared with how she behaves around other people?”

She Laughs at Things That Aren’t Particularly Funny

Extra laughter can be another ambiguous social signal. Someone interested may laugh readily during an interaction, including at ordinary comments that would not normally be especially funny. Laughter is not a secret attraction code. Some people laugh frequently by nature, while others use laughter to make conversations more comfortable. The surrounding interaction matters. Is she also maintaining the conversation, initiating contact, or showing other forms of engagement? A single laugh tells you very little.

It is more reasonable to view repeated positive engagement as part of a larger pattern than to treat laughter alone as confirmation.

She Starts Mirroring Your Movements

You may notice that she adopts some of your gestures, posture, expressions, or conversational rhythms. This is commonly described as behavioral mimicry. In experiments published in Psychological Science, Lakin and Chartrand found that having an affiliation goal increased nonconscious behavioral mimicry. Their findings suggest that people can unconsciously imitate interaction partners as part of attempts to create rapport.

Mirroring can reflect rapport, familiarity, social coordination, or attraction. It should not be interpreted as evidence of romantic interest on its own.

She Remembers Small Details About You

Another possible sign is unusually good recall of things you have mentioned. She might remember your favorite band, something you said about your weekend, a project you were working on, or a minor preference you mentioned weeks earlier. Attention to personal information can matter during attraction because getting to know someone involves exchanging information and reducing uncertainty.

That does not mean remembering details proves attraction. Some people are attentive listeners. A stronger signal is selective, sustained engagement: she remembers things about you, follows up later, and uses those details to keep the conversation going.

She Looks at You, Then Looks Away

Eye contact is one of the most discussed behaviors associated with attraction, but the research presents a more complicated picture than popular dating advice often suggests. A 2024 study in Archives of Sexual Behavior used mobile eye-tracking during naturalistic speed dates involving 60 participants. The researchers found that participants were more likely to choose dating partners with whom they shared more eye contact.

So repeated eye contact can be relevant, but context matters. Someone may look away because they are shy, distracted, culturally accustomed to different eye-contact norms, or simply thinking. Eye contact becomes more meaningful when it occurs alongside reciprocal conversation and other signs of engagement.

She Playfully Teases You

Playful teasing can sometimes appear in interactions where two people are becoming more comfortable with each other. It can create a more informal tone and give people a way to test how the other person responds. A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology examined teasing in both social and romantic relationships and found that teasing varied according to relationship and interpersonal factors. Among romantic couples, more satisfied partners tended to tease in more prosocial ways, with less threat to the other person’s social standing.

That is different from saying “teasing means she likes you.” Teasing can also be ordinary friendship behavior, humor, competitiveness, or even hostility. The distinction is often found in the interaction around the joke. Is the teasing mutual and light? Does she respond positively when you tease back? Does she respect boundaries? If the behavior consistently makes someone uncomfortable, don’t reframe it as flirting just because you’re considering attraction.

She Acts Completely Different Around You

The strangest behavior is a noticeable change in personality. Someone confident with friends may become unusually reserved around you. Someone normally serious may become much more playful. Someone who rarely initiates conversations may suddenly find reasons to interact. A behavior change can be worth noticing because attraction is partly relational. A person’s behavior is shaped not only by their individual characteristics but also by the specific person they are interacting with.

This helps explain why someone may behave differently with one person than with another. But again, a behavioral change does not establish the reason for it. The change could reflect admiration, intimidation, uncertainty, personality differences, or social circumstances.

She Gives You Mixed Signals

Mixed signals are among the easiest behaviors to overinterpret. Someone may be highly engaged during one conversation and distant during another. She may initiate contact occasionally but not consistently. She may appear interested in person but communicate very little afterward.

Multiple characteristics of both people and the interaction can also influence attraction itself. Treat mixed behavior as uncertainty rather than evidence that someone is “secretly interested.” If interest is inconsistent, the most accurate conclusion may be that you do not yet have enough information.

She Asks More Personal Questions

A woman who wants to get to know you may ask questions that go beyond small talk. She may want to know about your interests, relationships, ambitions, family, experiences, or opinions. In a study of continuing and noncontinuing dating relationships, couples who remained together four months later showed greater self-disclosure during their initial contact than couples who did not continue dating.

More recent research on initial interactions also shows that self-disclosure can be part of the process through which people become more familiar with one another. The important detail is reciprocity. If she asks personal questions and also volunteers information about herself, the conversation may be becoming more mutually intimate. If she is making polite conversation, the questions may remain relatively superficial.
