Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has earned another strong passenger-satisfaction result, ranking third among mega airports in the J.D. Power 2026 North America Airport Satisfaction Study.
The Arizona airport received a score of 642 points on J.D. Power’s 1,000-point satisfaction scale, placing it behind Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport, which ranked first with 684 points, and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, which ranked second with 663 points.
The ranking reflects how surveyed travelers rated their airport experiences compared with other high-volume North American airports.
To understand the result accurately, note that Phoenix Sky Harbor ranked third within J.D. Power’s mega-airport category, not third among every airport in the United States, and it is not a universal measure of the “best airport” overall.
For Arizona travelers, business passengers, and visitors passing through Phoenix, the ranking offers insight into how customers perceive one of the country’s busiest aviation hubs as the airport continues expanding services and improving infrastructure.
What Phoenix Sky Harbor’s Third-Place Ranking Means for Travelers

J.D. Power’s mega-airport category includes airports handling 33 million or more passengers annually. Phoenix Sky Harbor fits comfortably within this classification, serving more than 51.6 million passengers in 2025, according to airport data.
In the 2026 study, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport achieved the highest score among mega airports with 684 points, followed by Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport with 663 points.
Phoenix Sky Harbor placed third with 642 points. Phoenix finished 21 points behind Detroit and 42 points behind Minneapolis-Saint Paul.
The result demonstrates strong passenger satisfaction among major airports handling some of the largest traveler volumes in North America. However, the ranking should be viewed as a measurement of passenger experience rather than a complete evaluation of every airport function.
The study does not rank airports based on flight punctuality, ticket prices, security performance, airline operations, or safety records. Instead, it focuses on how passengers experience their journey through the airport.

How J.D. Power Measured Passenger Satisfaction
The J.D. Power 2026 North America Airport Satisfaction Study analyzed passenger experiences through surveys completed by travelers who had recently used airports in the United States and Canada.
The study included 24,710 completed surveys from U.S. and Canadian residents who had traveled through at least one U.S. or Canadian airport. Survey responses were collected between July 2025 and July 2026, and participants evaluated recent airport experiences involving departures, arrivals, and connecting journeys.
J.D. Power evaluated airport experiences across seven major areas: ease of travel through the airport, trust in the airport experience, terminal facilities, airport staff, departure and arrival experiences, and food, beverage, and retail options.
These measurements capture the overall passenger journey, including how easily travelers move through the airport, how they interact with facilities and employees, and how they view the services available during their trip.
Phoenix Sky Harbor Maintains a Strong Three-Year Ranking Trend
Phoenix Sky Harbor’s latest ranking continues a consistent performance pattern in the J.D. Power mega-airport category.
The airport ranked third in the category in 2024 with a score of 633, remained third in 2025 with a score of 634, and again ranked third in 2026 after increasing its score to 642.
Over the three-year period, Phoenix maintained its position among the highest-rated mega airports while gradually improving its passenger satisfaction score. The airport’s 2026 score was eight points higher than its 2025 score and nine points higher than its 2024 score.
The consistent placement highlights Phoenix Sky Harbor’s continued presence among major North American airports recognized for passenger experience.
Why Phoenix Sky Harbor’s Ranking Matters
Phoenix Sky Harbor serves as Arizona’s primary commercial airport and one of the Southwest’s busiest transportation hubs.
The airport handled more than 51.6 million passengers in 2025 and continued experiencing strong demand in 2026, including a record March when more than 5.12 million passengers traveled through the airport.
For travelers, the ranking reflects the scale of operations. Managing millions of passengers each month requires efficient terminals, reliable transportation connections, accessible services, and facilities designed to support large volumes of travelers.
