Extreme heat is still affecting parts of the United States as September moves forward, with heat advisories remaining active across areas of the South, lower Midwest, and Ohio Valley. 

As of Monday, September 14, the National Weather Service had issued heat advisories covering parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, and Alabama. Forecast peak heat-index values in affected areas were generally expected to range from 105°F to 114°F. 

While many people associate extreme heat with the height of summer, late-season hot and humid conditions are continuing in several regions as fall approaches. 

Why this matters for local communities 

Extreme heat can affect everyday routines, from outdoor activities and travel plans to how cities prepare public spaces. 

The National Weather Service measures heat risk using the Heat Index, which combines air temperature and relative humidity to estimate how hot conditions feel. For example, the agency notes that an air temperature of 96°F combined with 65% humidity can create a Heat Index of 121°F. 

That means a day that doesn’t look unusually hot by temperature alone can still create more challenging conditions when humidity is high.  

Cities are also paying attention to how the built environment affects heat. Climate Central reports that residents of the 65 largest U.S. cities experience, on average, 8°F of additional heat linked to factors such as pavement, buildings, and limited tree cover.  

Where heat advisories are active 

The current heat risk is concentrated in several regions. 

In Texas, parts of the state were forecast to experience heat-index values reaching up to 114°F on September 14, including areas around Brownsville and Corpus Christi. The Austin–San Antonio corridor was also included in advisories, with forecasts reaching up to 111°F. 

Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and surrounding areas were also facing high heat-index forecasts. Parts of central and eastern Arkansas were expected to reach up to 110°F, while Mississippi, northeast Louisiana, and southeast Arkansas were also forecast to see heat-index values up to 110°F. 

Additional advisories extended into Oklahoma, northwest Arkansas, southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, western Kentucky, southeast Missouri, and Middle Tennessee, with some areas forecast to reach heat-index values between 105°F and 108°F. 

How communities respond to ongoing heat

Local responses to extreme heat can vary depending on the area and available resources. 

Cities may use strategies such as cooling centers, public heat communications, shade projects, tree canopy improvements, cool roofs and pavements, heat mapping, and targeted assistance for people facing greater exposure. These approaches are examples of possible city actions rather than measures used by every community. 

For residents, local information remains important. City emergency-management agencies, weather offices, transit agencies, and other local organizations can provide updates specific to each community.

What workers and travelers should know 

Heat is also affecting conversations around workplaces. 

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has proposed a nationwide heat-specific workplace standard, but that proposal has not become a final rule. OSHA’s proposed “Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work Settings” rule was published in August 2024 and would, if finalized as proposed, cover many indoor and outdoor workplaces. 

The proposed standard would include steps such as evaluating heat hazards and providing measures like drinking water, rest breaks, indoor heat controls, training, and emergency-response procedures when certain risk thresholds are reached. These measures remain part of a proposal, not a current nationwide requirement. 

Travel can also be affected by extreme temperatures. The Federal Aviation Administration explains that hotter air is less dense and can affect aircraft performance, but heat does not automatically mean flights will be canceled. Airlines and flight crews make decisions based on aircraft operating manuals and manufacturer limits. 

The FAA also does not track heat-related flight delays as a separate nationwide category, so there is no official national count of delays caused specifically by heat. 

What comes next 

The current heat pattern is expected to continue in some areas. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center said above-normal temperatures were favored across much of the contiguous United States in its September 19–23 and September 21–27 outlook periods. The outlooks are probability-based and do not mean every location will experience extreme heat or record temperatures. 

Conditions will not be the same everywhere. NOAA’s outlook also includes areas where near- to below-normal temperatures are expected during parts of the forecast period. 

For now, residents should continue checking local forecasts and official weather updates, as heat advisories can change depending on conditions.
