A 2013 Allen Edmonds survey covered by Allure found women were more likely than men to say a partner’s shoes reflected fashion sense, attention to detail, personality, and financial position.

Shoes that can make a strong impression
Simple leather lace-up shoes
Classic leather Oxfords, derby shoes, and other sleek leather lace-ups are often associated with a more mature, polished look. In a survey of 434 young, single American women shown 32 men’s shoe styles, dressier leather shoes were rated more masculine, mature, and confidence-signaling than many rugged styles.
The key is not wearing the most formal pair possible. Dark brown, black, or oxblood leather shoes can work well when they match the rest of the outfit.
Loafers
Loafers offer a middle ground between formal and relaxed. They can look put together without feeling as strict as traditional dress shoes.
A small Los Angeles Times office survey found loafers received 75% of the vote among women asked about men’s footwear preferences. Loafers remain a popular choice for smart-casual outfits.
Clean, low-profile sneakers
Not every attractive shoe needs to be leather. Style-focused sneakers can create a modern, relaxed appearance when they look clean and intentional.
A UK survey of more than 2,000 people found women specifically selected fashion trainers among attractive men’s shoe choices. The important distinction is between stylish casual sneakers and shoes designed only for workouts. A crisp pair of minimalist sneakers can feel very different from worn-out gym shoes.
Brogues
Brogues earned the top spot in the same UK dating survey, receiving 15% of overall votes for the most attractive men’s shoes. Their detailed design makes them a useful option for smart-casual dates, office settings, or events where sneakers feel too casual.
The trick is balance. Brogues can elevate an outfit, but they may feel mismatched when paired with very athletic clothing.
Classic casual canvas sneakers
Simple canvas sneakers, including styles similar to Vans and Converse, can work because they create a casual but stylish appearance. In the 434-woman survey, these were among the highest-rated non-leather styles.
Their appeal comes from looking effortless rather than careless. Clean laces, intact soles, and a coordinated outfit matter more than having a brand-new pair.
Shoes that can hurt the overall impression
Flip-flops on a date
Flip-flops have their place, but the setting matters. In the 434-woman survey focused on first-date situations, flip-flops and other sandal styles ranked poorly among respondents.
That does not mean they are always a bad choice. They make sense at the beach, pool, or other casual locations. The issue is wearing them when the occasion calls for something more polished.
Crocs outside very casual situations
Crocs were among the sandal-like footwear choices that scored poorly in the same date-focused survey. Their comfort and practicality have made them popular, but they can send a more relaxed message than some dates expect.
The bigger lesson is about matching the shoe to the moment. A casual clog may work for errands or everyday tasks but may not fit a dressier evening.

Technical running shoes as everyday date shoes
Running shoes, hiking shoes, and other performance footwear are designed for specific activities, but they can create a different impression when worn outside those settings.
The 434-woman survey ranked true performance shoes in the lower half compared with casual fashion sneakers. This highlights an important difference: not all sneakers are viewed the same. A clean lifestyle sneaker and a bright training shoe communicate very different styles.
Socks with sandals
Socks with sandals remain one of the most debated men’s fashion combinations, with many people viewing the pairing as a style mismatch rather than a polished look.
Dirty or poorly maintained shoes
This may be the biggest mistake because it is not about personal taste. A person can prefer sneakers, boots, or dress shoes, but neglect can change the entire impression.
The Allen Edmonds survey found 54% of women said shoes reflected attention to detail. Scuffs, damaged laces, dirt, and visibly worn materials can make even an expensive pair look careless.

The surveys suggest women are often responding to signs of care and awareness rather than a specific shoe category. In the 434-woman survey, price did not directly determine ratings, and some highly rated pairs cost less than $100.
