The pantsless marketing campaigns made people laugh, but Matthew and Camila McConaughey’s Pantalones Organic Tequila is trying to prove a larger point: the brand is more than a famous name on a bottle. With industry awards, new product collaborations, and expansion beyond the liquor aisle, the celebrity-founded brand is building that case behind the scenes.
When Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves McConaughey launched Pantalones Organic Tequila in October 2023, the name immediately drew curiosity.
It was unusual.
It was playful.
It was impossible to ignore.
The brand leaned heavily into humor, with campaigns built around the idea that tequila doesn’t have to be overly serious. From pantsless ads to unconventional promotions, Pantalones created a personality that set it apart from traditional spirits brands.
But behind the jokes was a clear business goal.
The McConaugheys were not simply looking to attach their names to another celebrity product. They wanted to create a tequila brand with its own identity and a reputation based on quality.
Now, the company is trying to show consumers that the attention-grabbing marketing is only part of a bigger story.
From tequila bottle to ice cream scoop

The latest example came this summer when Pantalones moved into a different category: frozen desserts.
The brand partnered with Tipsy Scoop, a New York-based company known for creating alcohol-inspired ice cream, to launch Pantalones Peaches & Cream Margarita Ice Cream. The dessert combines fresh peach ice cream, Pantalones Organic Reposado Tequila, and lime flavors designed to recreate the experience of a peach margarita in a frozen format.
“Most margaritas are served on the rocks,” Persia Tatar, chief marketing officer of Pantalones Organic Tequila, said. “This summer, we’re deciding to serve ours by the scoop.”
The collaboration launched at Tipsy Scoop locations nationwide, giving customers a chance to experience the tequila brand outside the traditional bar setting.
A second product, Pantalones Dallas Margarita Sorbet, is also planned as a permanent offering at Tipsy Scoop’s Dallas location in the Bishop Arts District. The dairy-free sorbet features citrus and orange liqueur flavors, plus Pantalones Reposado tequila, inspired by a Texas-style margarita.
This collaboration reflects a larger trend in lifestyle branding.
Companies are increasingly trying to become part of consumers’ experiences, not just products sitting on a shelf.

The business behind the humor
The easiest thing to notice about Pantalones is the comedy.
The name alone creates a reaction.
The advertising is intentionally different.
The brand has built its image around not acting like a traditional luxury tequila company.
But the company has also focused on earning credibility in the spirits industry, underscoring the business behind the humor.
Pantalones Añejo earned a Platinum medal at the 2026 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, while the brand has received strong ratings from Wine Enthusiast, including 94 points for both its Blanco and Añejo expressions and 93 points for its Reposado.
Those achievements matter because celebrity recognition can attract customers once.
Quality determines whether they return.
That is the challenge facing many celebrity-backed businesses.
A famous name can create attention, but a strong product creates longevity.
Why celebrity brands are changing
Pantalones reflects a sharper approach to celebrity entrepreneurship.
Instead of simply endorsing products someone else created, more public figures are building companies connected to their personal identity.
The goal is ownership.
The McConaugheys have positioned Pantalones around a specific lifestyle: relaxed, humorous, authentic, and connected to Texas culture.
The brand doesn’t try to appear distant or exclusive.
It tries to feel approachable.
That strategy reflects a broader consumer shift. Many customers today are drawn to brands with personality and stories behind them. They want to understand who created a product and why it exists.
For celebrity brands, that personal connection can become a major advantage.

A partnership beyond the spotlight
Pantalones is also a shared project between Matthew and Camila McConaughey.
The couple, who married in 2012, have built the brand alongside their other professional and personal commitments, including family life in Austin and philanthropic work through the Just Keep Livin Foundation.
Camila Alves McConaughey brings her own background in design, entrepreneurship, and lifestyle projects, adding another perspective to a company built around entertainment, food, and culture.
Together, they represent a growing number of celebrity couples turning their public image into business partnerships.
The goal is not simply promotion.
It is creation.
The real test is whether the brand can outgrow the celebrity name and stand on its own.
Celebrity products often receive significant attention at launch.
The harder part is staying relevant afterward.
Pantalones is focused on building multiple ways for people to interact with the brand, from spirits competitions to food collaborations and regional experiences.
The tequila-to-ice-cream partnership may seem playful, but it reflects a serious business strategy: make the brand part of everyday culture.
The future of consumer brands is increasingly about experiences.
People remember stories.
They remember moments.
They remember products that feel connected to a lifestyle.

The products will determine the future.
For Matthew and Camila McConaughey, the experiment is clear: build something people notice, but more importantly, build something people want to keep coming back to.

The business will decide how long it lasts.
