Kelly Ripa’s chair sat empty on “Live with Kelly and Mark” this week after the veteran host underwent gum graft surgery that left her under a doctor’s orders not to talk. Her husband and co-host, Mark Consuelos, broke the news to viewers during Monday’s broadcast, explaining that his wife was recovering at home. Guest co-host Kevin Jonas stepped in alongside Consuelos to keep the show running in her absence.

Consuelos opened the show by sending well wishes on his wife’s behalf before explaining what had kept her away. He told the audience that Ripa had undergone a more significant procedure than her usual dental visits. “Kelly had a little bit, well, it’s not a little, she had a gum graft surgery,” he said.

The comment drew a mix of concern and curiosity from the studio audience and viewers at home. Consuelos did not shy away from details, noting that the recovery had proven more painful than his wife anticipated. He described her as someone who typically has a high tolerance for pain, which made her reaction to this particular procedure notable.

A gum graft is a dental procedure that involves moving tissue, often from the roof of the mouth, to cover areas where the gums have receded and exposed the tooth roots. The condition is common and often develops gradually over years. Dentists frequently recommend the surgery to prevent further damage to the teeth and surrounding bone.

Why Ripa Put Off the Procedure for Years

Consuelos said Ripa had known about the need for the surgery for quite some time but kept pushing it back. He explained that her dentist first raised the idea five years ago and gave her a rough timeline to get it done. Ripa reportedly laughed off the suggestion at the time.

“Her dentist said five years ago, ‘You can do it in about five years,'” Consuelos recalled. He added that Ripa had joked back then that she did not expect to still be hosting the show once that window arrived. The line got a laugh from Consuelos as he retold it, though he made clear the surgery had finally caught up with her.

The delay meant Ripa was dealing with the procedure at 55, an age when recovery from oral surgery can take a bit longer. It is not clear whether the wait made the surgery more complicated than it might have been years earlier. Consuelos focused instead on how she was handling the aftermath at home.

A Recovery That Comes With Strict Rules

One of the more notable details Consuelos shared was that Ripa had been told by her doctor not to talk while she heals. For a broadcaster whose job depends on speaking for hours each morning, the instruction stood out as unusual. Consuelos made clear this was not a casual suggestion but something her doctor was firm about.

Beyond staying quiet, Ripa’s recovery plan reportedly includes avoiding straws and sticking to soft foods only. Both restrictions are common after gum graft surgery, since suction from a straw can dislodge healing tissue and disrupt the graft site. Chewing tougher foods too soon can cause similar damage before the area has fully healed.

Consuelos also touched on how Ripa was coping with the discomfort itself. He noted that despite her usual high pain threshold, this recovery had tested her more than most past procedures. Still, he reassured viewers that she was doing well overall and simply needed time to heal properly.

When Kelly Ripa Is Expected Back on Air

Consuelos indicated that Ripa’s time away from the show would not stretch on indefinitely. Based on his comments, she is expected to return to her co-hosting duties after roughly a week of recovery. That timeline lines up with what dentists typically recommend for the initial healing phase following a gum graft.

In the meantime, Kevin Jonas filled the empty seat next to Consuelos, helping keep the show’s usual rhythm intact. Guest co-hosts stepping in during one half of the duo’s absence is not new territory for “Live with Kelly and Mark.” The show has long relied on a rotating cast of familiar faces whenever either host needs time off.

Ripa and Consuelos have built much of their on-air chemistry around candidly discussing their personal lives, including their health. The two have swapped stories about past medical procedures on air before, often turning them into playful back-and-forth bits. Monday’s segment fit that same pattern, giving viewers a clear and detailed explanation for Ripa’s absence.

For now, Ripa remains home, following her doctor’s orders and staying off camera and off the microphone. Consuelos is expected to continue hosting alongside guest co-hosts until she is cleared to return. Once healed, she is likely to bring her own account of the recovery process back to the show, continuing the couple’s tradition of turning personal health updates into on-air conversation.
