For his wedding, however, the creator known off-camera as Jimmy Donaldson chose something far more personal: a secluded Caribbean island, a relatively small guest list, and several days devoted to the people closest to him.

Donaldson, 28, married South African gamer and content creator Thea Booysen, also 28, during a private celebration on Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands. The event combined formal wedding traditions with outdoor activities, shared meals, and relaxed time among guests.
The island belongs to Virgin founder Richard Branson, but the groom’s low-key approach became the most unexpected detail. A man famous for turning almost every idea into a major production kept the ceremony intimate and ended the night with cards and board games. Family, friendship and time away from work became the focus of a wedding that could easily have become another global media event.
A Private Island Became a Weeklong Wedding Venue
Necker Island covers 74 acres in the North Sound of the British Virgin Islands, surrounded by coral reefs, white beaches and clear Caribbean water. The property can be hired for private use, making it a fitting choice for a couple who wanted distance from crowds and the pressure of staging a public show. Its remote setting also allowed guests to remain together throughout the celebration instead of arriving only for the vows.
The wedding week began several days before the ceremony, giving friends and relatives time to settle in and enjoy the island. Activities included snorkeling, kitesurfing, and encounters with some of the animals living there, including lemurs and flamingos. Those shared experiences turned the event into an extended gathering rather than a single formal evening.
Booysen later described the experience as “heaven” and emphasized how rare it was to have so many loved ones in one place. She and Donaldson maintain demanding work schedules, which can make extended time with friends and family difficult. Necker Island gave them space to slow down and celebrate without following the pace of their public careers.
The Ceremony Mixed Formal Style With Personal Details
A family friend who is also an ordained minister officiated the ceremony. Booysen wore a custom Nicole + Felicia Couture gown, while Donaldson chose a Ralph Lauren tuxedo. The familiar officiant added a personal connection to a ceremony framed by high-end fashion and a private tropical setting.
Booysen’s wedding look also included a bridal robe by Banke Kuku, makeup by Lola’s Beauty Mark and hair by Mikey Lu. Stylist Jeremy Noig coordinated her appearance, while event planner Marcy Blum organized the week of activities and celebrations. Music and entertainment were provided by On the Move Entertainment.
The newlyweds shared their first dance to “Die With a Smile” by Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars before guests danced to a live band. The reception menu included sushi, Wagyu beef and fish, followed by carrot cake, Booysen’s favorite. Later, the party moved to the main house, where cards and board games replaced the formal reception atmosphere.
Their Wedding Followed a Deliberately Quiet Engagement
Donaldson proposed on Christmas Day in 2024 while both families were together at the couple’s home. He used a large box as a distraction before presenting the ring, then got down on one knee without turning the moment into public content. Their relatives were included in the plan, giving the engagement the same family-centered tone that later defined the wedding.
The choice revealed a side of Donaldson that does not always appear in his videos. Although his online identity is tied to oversized prizes, expensive productions, and highly visible stunts, he wanted the proposal to remain private because Booysen is close to her family. Christmas allowed relatives from South Africa and the United States to share the moment together.
The couple had already made clear that their wedding would follow a similar approach. Booysen said after the engagement that they were considering an island far from most people and wanted an intimate event with close friends and relatives. Donaldson also indicated that fans should not expect the ceremony to become another major video because he preferred to keep their relationship largely behind the camera.
A Chance Meeting in South Africa Led to Marriage
Donaldson and Booysen met in South Africa in 2022 after a mutual friend invited her to join a dinner. Their conversation covered learning, neuroscience, books, and creative work, giving them common ground beyond online entertainment. Donaldson contacted her after returning to the United States, and the relationship developed through long-distance visits.
The couple eventually moved in together while continuing to build separate careers. Booysen is known online as TheaBeasty and has worked as a gamer, streamer, and esports commentator. She is also a published author and has completed university studies in law, psychology, and neuropsychology.
Their wedding marked the public beginning of a marriage they had treated as a long-term goal. Booysen has said the ceremony felt like a formality because they had already discussed family life and growing old together. The vows made that commitment official in front of the people they considered most important.
For Donaldson, the celebration also reversed expectations attached to the MrBeast name. Instead of inviting the world into another carefully produced event, he and Booysen brought a small circle into a private setting shaped by meals, water activities, music, and games. The week still carried a major scale, but its defining moments were personal rather than promotional.
