A quiet Wednesday afternoon in the Hamptons turned into a scene straight out of a movie when a 63-year-old Bronx man drove straight through the front security gate of Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s East Hampton estate.

According to East Hampton Village Police, the driver was identified as Keith Jonathan Webster, and he was taken into custody after the couple’s own security team wrestled him to the ground and held him until officers arrived.

It is not currently known whether Beyoncé or Jay-Z were home at the time of the incident, and neither has publicly commented on what happened.

Police say Webster was behind the wheel of a 2024 Subaru SUV when he drove at a high rate of speed up the estate’s driveway a little after noon and failed to stop before slamming into the property’s fortified wooden security gate.

Officers described the impact as causing significant damage to the gate, which had to be temporarily repaired and put back in place by Friday morning.

The felony charge against Webster is based on the gate sustaining a minimum of $1,500 worth of damage, according to police. His vehicle was subsequently impounded as part of the investigation into the crash.

Webster was arrested at the scene and charged with criminal mischief in the second degree, a felony, along with criminal trespass in the third degree, a misdemeanor.

He reportedly complained of pain following the crash and was taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries before being released back into police custody.

Officers then held him overnight so he could be arraigned the following morning before East Hampton Town Justice Steven Tekulsky, who issued a stay-away order of protection barring Webster from attempting to contact Beyoncé or Jay-Z going forward.

During the arraignment, Webster reportedly appeared disoriented, which led authorities to have him transported afterward to Stony Brook University Hospital’s mental health facility for further evaluation.

That detail has become a central part of how investigators are approaching the case, since it lines up with several other observations officers made in the immediate aftermath of the crash.

Rather than treating this as a straightforward act of trespassing with clear intent, police have focused on understanding exactly what led Webster to that specific driveway in the first place.

Investigators say there are no signs the couple was targeted

Detective Sergeant Jennifer Dunn, one of the responding officers on the case, told reporters that Webster’s motive remains under investigation, but that several early details point away from any deliberate targeting of the couple.

She confirmed that Webster was unarmed at the time of his arrest and does not have any known criminal history, two facts that have shaped how seriously investigators are weighing the possibility of a genuine medical or cognitive episode rather than an intentional act against the high-profile homeowners.

Dunn also said Webster appeared confused throughout the encounter, reinforcing that same theory. Dunn added a detail that has become one of the more telling parts of this story, noting that Webster made no threats or mentioned the residents’ names at any point during the incident.

No weapons or written notes were found in connection with the crash, further supporting investigators’ current belief that this was not a targeted act against Beyoncé or Jay-Z specifically.

As Dunn put it, “It could just be chance he picked that house if he was having a medical issue,” a comment that captures just how uncertain the situation still appears from a law enforcement standpoint even after an arrest was made.

Adding another layer to the mystery, police say surveillance cameras along Montauk Highway have helped investigators piece together where Webster had been just before the crash.

According to Dunn, the couple’s gated estate was not actually his original destination that day. Investigators say Webster had reportedly stopped at another nearby home beforehand, where he asked for a woman who did not live there, an interaction that has only strengthened the theory that he may have been experiencing some form of confusion or a medical issue rather than intentionally seeking out the celebrity couple’s property.

That earlier stop is now considered a key piece of evidence as police continue trying to reconstruct his movements leading up to the crash.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z have owned their East Hampton estate for several years, and like most homes belonging to high-profile celebrities, it is equipped with substantial security measures, including the mechanical gate that ultimately absorbed the impact of Webster’s vehicle.

Incidents involving uninvited visitors at celebrity properties are not entirely unprecedented in the Hamptons or elsewhere, though the scale of this particular crash, with a vehicle actually breaching a security gate rather than simply approaching on foot, has made it stand out compared to more routine trespassing reports involving famous homeowners.

As of now, there has been no public statement from either Beyoncé or Jay-Z regarding the incident, and their representatives have not issued any on-the-record comment.

Given the stay-away order already in place and the ongoing police investigation into Webster’s background and motive, it remains unclear whether the couple will address the matter publicly at all, though incidents like this one often prompt increased behind-the-scenes security reviews even when the homeowners choose not to comment directly.

For now, the investigation remains active, with police continuing to look into exactly what led Webster to the property and whether his apparent disorientation was tied to an underlying medical condition.

Webster’s case will continue moving through the court system following his arraignment, and any additional findings about his mental state or medical history could ultimately influence how the criminal charges against him proceed from here.

Until then, the crash serves as a reminder of just how much security celebrities like Beyoncé and Jay-Z maintain around their private homes, and how quickly even a seemingly quiet Wednesday afternoon in the Hamptons can turn into a scene requiring police, hospital visits, and a court appearance all within the span of a single day.
