Kristi Noem intends to end her 34-year marriage to Bryon Noem, according to her mother, who says the former Homeland Security secretary privately disclosed the decision during a family gathering this spring.

Corinne Arnold said her daughter made it clear that reconciliation was no longer expected when relatives gathered for a grandchild’s birthday.

The reported decision follows months of intense attention surrounding allegations about Bryon Noem’s private online activities.

Still, one crucial distinction remains. No publicly available divorce filing had surfaced at the time of publication, and neither Kristi nor Bryon Noem had personally announced that legal proceedings were underway.

Arnold said she directly asked her daughter whether she and Bryon might reunite. According to her account, Kristi Noem answered, “No. We’re going to get a divorce.” The conversation reportedly occurred in late spring, while family members were attending a birthday celebration. Arnold described the situation as painful but said the family had anticipated that the marriage would end.

“It has been difficult,” Arnold said, explaining that the couple’s separation did not come as a complete surprise to those closest to them. Arnold also expressed sympathy for Bryon, noting that he had been part of the family for decades.

Her comments presented the split as a long-developing personal decision rather than an abrupt response to a single news report.

No public Kristi Noem divorce filing has been confirmed

Despite headlines declaring that Kristi Noem is divorcing her husband, the available information does not establish that a court case has officially begun. Multiple publications reported being unable to locate public divorce records.

Neither spouse had issued a personal statement confirming a filing, identifying a court, or providing a timetable for formally dissolving the marriage.

That means the most precise description is that, based on her mother’s account, Noem plans to divorce Bryon.

Saying that the divorce has already been filed or finalized would go beyond what is verified in the public record. Bryon has reportedly moved away from the couple’s ranch near Castlewood, South Dakota, and continues operating his insurance business. Those details have also come from media reports rather than from a statement by either spouse.

Reports about Bryon Noem intensified scrutiny of the marriage

The couple’s relationship attracted renewed attention after the Daily Mail published an investigation alleging that Bryon Noem had communicated with online adult performers, made payments to some of them and participated in private role-playing activities.

The outlet said its reporting relied on photographs, recorded audio, and electronic messages. The allegations have not been established in court, and Bryon Noem has not publicly confirmed the central claims described in the investigation.

A representative for Kristi Noem said at the time that she was devastated and that the family had been blindsided.

The spokesperson asked the public for privacy and prayers while the family dealt with the disclosures. The response did not announce a separation or divorce. However, Arnold now says her daughter disclosed plans to leave the marriage shortly after the allegations became public.

Questions remain about the next legal steps

Several significant details remain unknown. Noem has not said where or when a divorce petition might be filed. There is no confirmed information about the division of property, the family ranch, business interests or other possible terms of a settlement.

It is also unclear whether Kristi and Bryon plan to issue a joint statement. Public figures sometimes confirm marital separations only after legal documents become available, while others keep the proceedings private until a settlement is reached.

Until that happens, Arnold’s interview remains the strongest evidence that the marriage is ending. Her relationship to Noem gives her account weight, but it does not replace a filing or direct confirmation from the couple.
