A disturbing shooting case out of Orange County is now moving deeper into the court system after a 27-year-old man accused of attacking a 70-year-old woman near an Orlando bus stop pleaded not guilty to an attempted murder charge.

Kevin Millares is accused of shooting the woman three times in the back on June 8 near the 1000 block of Egan Drive in Orlando’s Azalea Park neighborhood. Prosecutors are now asking a judge to keep him jailed without bond while the case moves toward trial. A detention hearing is expected on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

A Morning Walk Turns into a Violent Attack

According to investigators, the woman was out on her morning walk when she noticed an unfamiliar man approaching her near a bus stop. Deputies said she turned away from him, and that is when the man allegedly shot her three times in the back.

The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery. Another local report said she was later recovering from her injuries.

What makes the case especially unsettling is the setting. This was not a late-night confrontation in a hidden alley. It happened during a morning walk in a residential neighborhood, near a bus stop, in a place where ordinary people move through their daily routines. For many residents, that detail is what makes the allegations so alarming.

Court documents also describe a witness who was across the street at the time of the shooting. According to those records, the witness said he saw the suspect pass the woman, walk up behind her, and fire. After the woman fell, the suspect allegedly shot her two more times before leaving the area.

Surveillance Video, Ammunition, and a Trail Back to a Nearby Home

Detectives said they used surveillance video from multiple homes in the neighborhood as part of the investigation. The footage reportedly showed the suspect walking through the area before the attack.

Investigators later connected the man in the footage to Kevin Millares, who lived only blocks away on Faber Drive. A real estate agent connected to a nearby property also reviewed the footage and identified him, according to court documents.

When a SWAT team served a search warrant at Millares’ home, he was not there. Investigators said they found a loaded Hornady .380 magazine and matching ammunition in the kitchen. Deputies also said the ammunition matched the caliber of three shell casings recovered at the scene.

Inside the home, investigators also found black shorts and sandals that they said matched clothing seen in surveillance footage. A K-9 unit later tracked a scent from the shooting scene to an area just across the street from Millares’ address, according to court documents.

Millares was arrested in New York by the U.S. Marshals Service after authorities said he fled the Orlando area following the shooting. He was later returned to Orange County and booked into the Orange County Jail.

He has been charged with first-degree attempted murder with a firearm. Court records show he has pleaded not guilty. That plea means the case now moves forward under the legal process, where prosecutors must prove the charge in court. For now, the next major question is whether Millares will remain jailed without bond until trial. Prosecutors are pushing for pretrial detention, arguing that he should not be released while the case is pending.

This is a case that has drawn attention because of the victim’s age, the public location, and the apparently sudden nature of the attack. A woman in her 70s was simply walking through her neighborhood. Minutes later, she was fighting for her life. Still, the legal process is not finished. Millares is accused, not convicted. His not guilty plea preserves his right to fight the charge in court. The facts will now be tested before a judge and, if the case goes to trial, possibly a jury.

For the Azalea Park community, the case is also a reminder of how quickly a quiet morning can turn into a crime scene. For prosecutors, the focus is now on keeping the suspect behind bars while they build their case. For the victim and her loved ones, the hope is recovery, justice, and answers to a question that still hangs over the neighborhood: why would someone allegedly target a woman on a morning walk?
