Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds Skip Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Wedding for a Horse Show Instead… Here’s Why

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce officially became husband and wife on Friday, July 3, in a star-studded ceremony at Madison Square Garden.

But two of the most notable names missing from the guest list were Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, whose absence has fans and outlets alike connecting the dots to a friendship that’s been under strain for months.

The couple was photographed roughly 200 miles away in Lake Placid, New York, cheering on their six-year-old daughter Betty at a local horse show, according to TMZ, which reported that Betty rode well enough to earn a second-place finish.

It’s a striking split-screen moment: while Swift and Kelce exchanged vows surrounded by decades of famous friends, Lively and Reynolds spent their Friday in the stands of a small-town equestrian event.

The timeline makes the absence even harder to write off as a scheduling conflict. Swift and Kelce held their rehearsal dinner on July 2, followed by the wedding itself on July 3 at Madison Square Garden, and Lively and Reynolds did not attend either event.

Instead, as Swift and Kelce’s friends and family gathered at Madison Square Garden on July 2 for what appeared to be a rehearsal dinner, Lively and Reynolds stepped out at the horse show, with Lively wearing a blue tank top and denim shorts and Reynolds in a white T-shirt, khakis, and a straw hat.

It’s not a case of the couple being out of town or unreachable. They were simply, visibly, somewhere else.

The Wedding Everyone Was Talking About

The ceremony itself was never short on star power, even without Lively and Reynolds in the room.

In a twist nobody saw coming, Adam Sandler served as the officiant, standing at the altar alongside Swift and Kelce, who chose not to have a traditional bridal party and instead had their brothers, Austin Swift and Jason Kelce, stand in as men of honor and best man.

It turns out the choice wasn’t as random as it looked from the outside. Sandler had grown close to both Swift and Kelce independently over the years, and he’d already gone on record about his affection for the Chiefs tight end after the two worked together on “Happy Gilmore 2.”

“Travis is such a gentle, nice guy, and funny as hell,” Sandler told Entertainment Tonight, according to Sports Illustrated. “He’s like the guys I grew up with. When I was with Travis, it reminded me of my buddies in high school and just being able to laugh and say the things you want to say.”

The guest list read like a greater-New-York-meets-Hollywood roll call. Outlets reported sightings of Ed Sheeran, Bradley Cooper, Gigi Hadid, Dakota Johnson, Zoë Kravitz, Hugh Grant, Karlie Kloss, and Miranda Lambert making their way into the venue, alongside couples like Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann and Abby Wambach and Glennon Doyle.

A statement from Swift’s team, credited to publicist Tree Paine and relayed by Variety, confirmed the ceremony’s low-key structure: “Taylor & Travis did not have bridesmaids or groomsmen. Instead, her brother Austin Swift served as Taylor’s Man of Honor and Jason Kelce was Travis’ Best Man.” Both Swift and Kelce reportedly wore custom Christian Dior Haute Couture designed by Jonathan Anderson, marking the first celebrity couture wedding gown for the designer.

So, Where Exactly Were Blake and Ryan?

While the Garden filled up with A-listers, Lively and Reynolds were fully in parent mode. Multiple outlets independently confirmed the same detail: the couple was at a horse show in Lake Placid supporting Betty, one of their four children with Reynolds, who also includes James, 11, Inez, 9, and Olin, 3.

It wasn’t a secret trip or a quiet weekend away. Photos of the family at the event circulated widely, and no representative for either Lively or Reynolds has disputed that this is exactly where they chose to be while Swift and Kelce were getting married across the state.

What makes the absence newsworthy isn’t just the distance, though; it’s the history behind it. Swift and Lively have been photographed together for years, including a joint appearance at the 2024 Super Bowl to watch Kelce and the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers.

That kind of closeness is exactly why so many people expected Lively to be standing inside Madison Square Garden rather than watching a youth riding competition from the sidelines.

What Actually Happened Between Taylor and Blake

The strain between Swift and Lively traces back to Lively’s legal battle with her “It Ends With Us” co-star Justin Baldoni.

According to TMZ, sources with direct knowledge said Swift was frustrated after being pulled into the dispute, feeling she’d been unnecessarily dragged into a legal fight that wasn’t hers, and she was subpoenaed in the case before that subpoena was later withdrawn.

That kind of unwanted spotlight, layered onto an already famous friendship, appears to have left a mark that outlasted the lawsuit itself.

It’s worth being careful here because reporting on the two women’s private communication has gotten complicated.

Portions of text exchanges between Swift and Lively surfaced in unsealed court filings connected to the Baldoni case, and several outlets have characterized them as showing real tension, with Swift reportedly telling Lively she missed the version of their friendship that felt more personal and less like a distant, formal check-in.

Those messages also apparently included warmth and history between the two, which is part of why some entertainment reporters have cautioned against reading Friday’s absence as a permanent falling-out.

As one source told People, Swift “was just being a friend to Blake, and it’s turned into something bigger than she ever expected. She never thought private messages would become public.”

That framing matters because it’s the only insight into Swift’s side that’s been attributed to someone close to her.

Neither Swift nor Lively has issued a personal, on-record statement addressing whether Lively was invited to the wedding, whether she declined, or whether the friendship is simply going through a rough patch that outsiders are reading too much into.

Several outlets have reported that Lively wasn’t on the guest list at all, which, if accurate, would explain the absence far more simply than an active boycott would.

Until either woman speaks directly, the most honest reading is the modest one: Lively and Reynolds spent their Friday at their daughter’s horse show; they weren’t at the wedding; and the reasons remain genuinely unconfirmed.

For now, Swift and Kelce are newlyweds, Sandler has a new line on his résumé as an ordained-for-a-day officiant, and Betty Reynolds placed second in her riding competition. Whatever is or isn’t happening between Swift and Lively, both families appear to have had exactly the weekend they wanted.
