A Ukrainian drone strike has hit a major oil refinery in Moscow, setting off fires and thick smoke in the Russian capital as the war continues to expand far beyond Ukraine’s borders.
The strike, reported on June 18, targeted the Kapotnya oil refinery in southeastern Moscow, one of the city’s key fuel-processing facilities. Emergency services were deployed after explosions were reported in the area, with flames and smoke visible across parts of the capital.
Russian officials said air defense systems intercepted several incoming drones, but multiple devices still managed to reach the refinery zone, causing damage and fires. No official casualty figures have been confirmed so far.
A Rare Strike Deep Inside the Russian Capital
The attack stands out because it reached deep into Moscow, a city that is heavily protected by layered air defense systems.

Footage shared by residents online showed smoke rising into the sky and emergency vehicles moving through nearby districts as authorities worked to contain the blaze.

Ukraine has argued that these facilities directly support Russia’s war effort by supplying fuel for military vehicles, aircraft, and logistics operations.
