A memorable couples costume doesn’t need two expensive plastic bags. Some of the best Halloween looks start with ordinary jeans, thrift-store shirts, old makeup, and one recognizable detail.

The trick is choosing characters people can identify without a long explanation. These 10 costume ideas deliver plenty of personality without demanding professional sewing skills or a frightening credit card bill.

Bob and Linda from Bob’s Burgers are a couple who value comfort as much as comedy. Better yet, most of the required pieces may already be hiding in your closets.

Bob can wear gray pants, a white T-shirt, an apron, and a fake black mustache. Linda needs jeans, a red long-sleeved shirt, red glasses, and an apron. Carry a spatula to complete the burger shop look.

Danny and Sandy

Few costumes deliver retro romance as clearly as Danny and Sandy from the 1978 musical Grease. Their final carnival outfits are also surprisingly simple to recreate.

Danny needs black jeans, a fitted black shirt, and slicked-back hair. Sandy’s look calls for black pants, a black top, curled hair, red shoes, and bold red lipstick.

Brad and Janet

Brad and Janet begin The Rocky Horror Picture Show looking painfully conventional. That makes them a great choice for couples who want a recognizable costume without complicated makeup or uncomfortable accessories.

Brad can wear tan pants, a light blue shirt, glasses, a sweater vest, and a bow tie. Janet’s early movie look includes a pink dress, white cardigan, sensible shoes, and a small purse.

The Phantom and Christine

This theatrical pairing brings plenty of Halloween drama without requiring a Broadway wardrobe. The official character guide describes Christine as the rising singer caught between the Phantom and her childhood friend Raoul.

The Phantom needs a dark suit, black cape, and white half mask. Christine can wear a flowing white dress, curled hair, and simple costume jewelry. Check secondhand stores before buying specialty pieces.

Mia and Sebastian

Mia and Sebastian from La La Land work well for couples who want to dress elegantly without looking buried under costumes. Lionsgate identifies them as an actress and a jazz musician chasing their ambitions in Hollywood.

Sebastian can wear dark trousers, a white dress shirt, and a slim black tie. Mia’s bright yellow dress creates her most recognizable look. Add comfortable dancing shoes in case the party needs its own musical number.

Mulder and Scully

Dark business suits do most of the work for this X-Files costume. Add white shirts, conservative ties, and homemade FBI identification cards that are clearly marked as props.

A red wig helps distinguish Scully, while either person can carry a flashlight. Complete the costume with serious expressions and a willingness to investigate every strange noise at the party.

Poppy and Branch

Poppy and Branch from DreamWorks’ Trolls offer a bright break from Halloween’s usual black clothing and fake blood. Their colorful hair makes the characters easy to recognize.

Poppy can wear a blue dress with pink hair. Branch needs blue clothing, shorts, and a green leaf-style vest. Make their tall troll hair from inexpensive wigs, felt, or colored paper attached to headbands.

A zombie couple

Zombies remain perfect for couples who reach Halloween with no costume and very little time. Old clothing, washable fake blood, pale makeup, and messy hair can create the entire look.

Choose clothes you are prepared to stain or cut. You can arrive as matching zombies or have one person play a survivor. Leave realistic weapon props at home, especially if you plan to celebrate in public.

Mia Wallace and Vincent Vega

The famous dance-floor pair from Pulp Fiction relies on simple black-and-white clothing. Mia needs cropped black pants, a loose white shirt, a dark bob, and red lipstick.

Vincent can wear black trousers, a white shirt, a black jacket, and a bolo tie. Add slicked-back hair or a low ponytail. The matching color scheme makes the two outfits feel connected with little effort.

Luke Cage and Claire Temple

Marvel fans can recreate Luke Cage and Claire Temple with clothing that still feels comfortable after several hours at a party. Luke’s casual look centers on dark pants, boots, and a fitted shirt or hoodie.

Claire can wear blue scrubs and a homemade name badge clearly marked as a costume. Luke does not need fake bullet holes or realistic weapons. A confident pose should make the reference clear enough.

A good couples costume depends more on creativity and commitment than money. Search your closets, visit a thrift store, and choose the characters you will have the most fun playing.
